I picked up my ID.4 Pro S yesterday from the dealer. I can’t figure out how to manually search for and download software updates. When I go to system settings>system information>display all updates — nothing appears. It is a completely blank screen.

is there a way to do this currently?

No, there is no option for that.
The car checks automatically for available updates once a week, and once it finds an available update it will show it in that screen and it will download it automatically.
FYI: it uses it's own cellular network for that, it doesn't use WiFI or the verizon data network you can optionally add

EV check in once a week with VW server for updates...and all traffic if there is update available will happening over LTE network built-in.... security reasons don't allow to use Wi-Fi.
You will be prompted to download once available and it will continue in background once finished it will explain what are requirements...click ...and walk away or seat and watch.

No seat and and watch in the first few minutes at least. Car needs to be locked and empty in the first minutes for the update to start.
only once it passed the "point of no return" you could stare at a "please be patient" screen until it's done (yawn :D)

Interesting, then what is the WiFi for?

... and since I have no need for same I didn't sign up to extend WiFi Hotspot beyond the initial free 30-day period. ;)
Note that in the USA we do have the three basic Car-Net functions free for 5 years.
Europe only has it for free for the first 3 actually. but without car-net/WeConnect Id. you can't get updates, so that might be a compelling reason to start paying for it later.
Depending on how long they'll supply updates to the car.

Thanks for that information. I have been wondering how the update happens. According to the ID4 tech at Ourisman VW, there have been no automatic updates for car owners up to now, July 27, 2021. He went on to say there are rumors of a pending update but no firm date.

That is a good question. Seems like nothing, currently. I can connect my car to my home Wi-Fi but if it doesn't pull SW updates... what's the point? Maybe it'll have more use in the future for pulling down updates/browsing media.
