Hello ID.4 owners.

I have a TP-Link M9 Plus mesh router and the ID4 has issues connecting to it. the wifi icon for my SSID is always crossed out and clicking on it the system gives me a cannot connect notification. The security setting on my networks is WPA2-PSK [AES]+WPA-PSK[TKIP]. If I enable the guest network with just WPA2-PSK [AES], it's connects to the network, but then Car-Net won't work, it wont connect to it. Other devices on the guest network work fine, though I am not sure what's going on with the car's connection. Is there a way to test the wifi connection on the car?

This is a good question that I wish had more comments. I am looking to update my software and am not sure if I am connected to my WiFi or if the ID4 will use my phone (when connected) to install or download the updates.

When looking into my Info, it doesn't seem like I've install any of the updates. Reading around the forums, it looks like ppl are on v2.4 or something of the like. Me? I don't think I have any new versions updated.

Any tips or suggestions would be welcomed.

@Qeww you're on 2.1 like everybody else in the US.

Your first software update will be done at the dealership. Start dates havn't been announced.

For now future OTA updates will be done over the car's cellular connection. Your cell phone and your WiFi are not involved.

I posted a question a couple months ago about the use / value of the WiFi connection. From what I can tell the WiFi connection (monitoring my router connections) from the ID4 is not active when the car is turned off so you cannot connect to the car through this path when the car is parked in your garage. According to all the posts I have read all the software updates will only be provided only over the 4G LTE connection, not using the WiFi connection. I contacted CarNet and they said they did not support accessing the ID4 over WiFi. This has been a big issue for me because where I live, I do not have any cell phone coverage, thought this would solve the issue with going as far as to add another node to my mesh to cover the garage. So, what is the WiFi connection used for today? Maybe it is there for something in the future.

I haven't found a good answer for this question.

BTW are you receiving navigation (maps) update? Those are received OTA, but I'm unsure if they're cellular only or perhaps WiFi if it's available / connected.

... I have never been prompted to do any updates.
For nav, you won't be promoted. All background process.

Don't expect any US OTAs (which you'll be prompted for) until after 3.1 is deployed.

The in-car WiFi is a little bit of a let down when you realize what it is for. What I have been told when it was first announced on the Atlas way back was that it is for in-car sharing of files like music. It is meant for the devices in the vehicle to link to, not the other way around. Think of it like a router. It is meant to be used with the Media Control App

Also, not sure if this is related to the original question, but wireless Apple Carplay (and maybe Android Auto?) require a Wi-Fi connection to work, so the car’s Wi-Fi has to provide that for those integrations to work.

I use the media selection of the infotainment system to access a 2TB SSD memory stick with a type C connector which has all my music (~100 GB). $30 for the drive (Amazon) + $10 for the adapter gives me all my music anytime.

Wow, that iOS App sure gets some miserable reviews. But then so does myVW Car-Net. 🤷‍♂️

That's an excellent media/medium and I've done similar on prior VWG vehicles, although had some issues with playlist selection/retention; but that was back then. I used the excellent "Export for iTunes" app-utility to bring over music from iMac to memory stick/SDHC btw.
Now I just use iPhone BT CarPlay however.

Hello All, brand new owner of a 22 ID.4 which is currently running 3.1. Absolutely love it so far! I found this thread after trying to figure out how to connect it to my Wi-fi network like every other car I’ve owned previously. What I’ve discovered is that on my car at least, there is no secondary wi-fi setting to connect to an external network. The only setting in the wi-fi menu is to activate and adjust the car’s hotspot. I thought it was a mistake, but after reading this, I’m wondering if they just removed that feature in the latest version since it sounds like it did nothing anyway. The cellular connection has worked flawlessly for me, granted, in an area with good cell service.

I have realized the same thing, that the "Search for Wi-Fi" function is not available on version 3.1. I'd love to connect to my home internet as my cell service at my home is garbage, but alas. my only concern is any OTA updates will take forever, or have to wait until I'm in a better cellular area.

For security reasons, any OTA updates will be cellular network only. This is highly unlikely to change. There‘s really no point in connecting to home Wi-Fi from the car anyway. The myVW app doesn’t connect directly to the car and instead sends all of its requests to a central server, which then relays them to the car over the cellular network.
