ID.4 Door Latch Malfunctions

2874 Views 29 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  Deni
I've seen multiple posts from people experiencing problems with the ID.4 door latch and just thanked (enter deity of your choice) that I did not have any problems with mine.

That was true until this past weekend when my passenger door latch started misbehaving.

The problems I've observed with it are:
  1. Door unlatches on it's own
  2. Car unlocks even though I do not have "unlock on approach" set.
  3. The doors do not lock when driving
  4. The internal door lock buttons do not work
  5. Just this morning, the passenger door unlatched and swung open while driving.
Of course all this is intermittent, I'm afraid that when I show up for my service appointment this weekend everything will be working fine.

I've seen enough reports of door latch issues on this forum to suspect that either it is a design defect or a bad batch of latch components from a supplier. In either case I think this might be rising to the point of requiring a recall campaign to resolve. To that end I am creating this poll to get an idea of how widespread the issue is and if there are any commonalities in which cars experience it.

We have had reports of doors swinging open but I can't remember which year cars they were.
We had to have our driver door handle replaced about 6 months after purchase because it stopped opening from the inside. It was an annoying few weeks of crawling out the passenger side, but All works great now!

That's been our problem. My wife and I have both (simultaneously) observed the problem of the driver's side door lock triangle being completely non-functional and I've mentioned it to my dealer but the problem is sufficiently intermittent that the dealer hasn't seen it happen yet. I've also got a VW Customer Care Case opened for the problem.

Right now, based on scant evidence, I do believe that the problem on my car is correlated with periods of the exterior being wet.

Mine seems to be more related to cold.
I just hope it fails for the service manager as well.

While my door hasn't unlocked on it's own, I am not at times able to lock the car via the exterior door handle after it's rained for an extended period. Opening and closing the door several times seems to cure it. Makes me wonder if there is an issue with water ingress which is playing havoc on the door electronics.

Good! Another data point supporting the “doesn't work when wet” theory! (Me, I'm betting that wetness creates a degraded signal-to-noise ratio at the capacitive-touch triangle sensor.)
I find that if there is moisture on your fingers or on the touch to lock, it will not sense your finger very well. Pretty much like the touchpad on any laptop if your finger is too moist

I've owned cars with this tech since 2004 and never had an issue. And this was during my time living in Canada with some extreme winters. So while you might be onto something, I think it's unique to whatever setup VW has in place at the moment. My mates Skoda Enyaq was in for warranty work with one item being the car wouldn't lock when he touched the pad on the door handle. They replaced the battery in his key fob and now all is working. So perhaps its the key fobs being rundown with the proximity sensors always on in this case.

I'll keep this all in mind during the next rain spell and when I'm washing the car and see if I sense anything amiss.

Sounds like we have the same problem, only mine is on the passenger side.

You got it worst though, at least on driver side you can close it when moving...

This should be a recall.

I think with only 2 of us with this particular problem so far we are not in recall territory.
Probably just a case of infant mortality.
Add mine to the list 2023 AWD. Passenger door opens spontaneously, door randomly unlocks in middle of night all the same symptoms I'm seeing others report. Dropped off at dealer 2 weeks ago and they were able to reproduce the problem. Latest I heard they are waiting on parts.
Well my service advisor just called less than 90 minutes after dropping my car off.
They say the passenger door handle needs to be replaced and they have ordered the part.
They say the car can be driven but the door latch needs to operated manually, not electronically.
I'll be picking the car up at lunch time today and will know more after I talk to the advisor.

@IslandLarry : Found this thread after your comment in this related thread. What came of your issue? Is it just the handle or some other release latch/mechanism?

In my case, it is happening on the rear passenger door (only, so far). I don't want to bring the car in and leave it for unknown duration yet since I just observed it today.

I had it to the dealer last Friday 2/3.
It took them less than 2 hours to diagnose as the door handle and ordered the replacement part.
They told me the handle would be in this week, but it comes unpainted and has to go to the body shop to be painted before it can be installed on the car.
Service manager sent me a link to a video of the inspection but I can't post it here without including a whole lot of PII.
The report said it was the touch sensor in the outer door handle and when it was opened manually you could hear the door clicking crazily.

I continue to experience unlocking and the interior door lock buttons not working, but have not had any unlatching/opening incidents since the visit.

I hear the locking mechanism/clicking after someone closes my passenger door. Should I start getting concerned?
