Hi, just waiting for my 1st Edition to arrive but have a question about lane keep assist. I'm coming from an XC90 with Autopilot which did a very good job of lane keeping. I was unable to test drive a VW with the lane assist so the question I have please, is the LKA basically semi autonomous or does it just wait for you to cross the white lines and then correct itself with a beep. Obviously if it's the later then not a very relaxing experience on long journeys.

Anyone, particularly in the UK, have any input on this please? I have the car on order and the Semi Autonomous motorway driving is a deal breaker for me, I was told it would work fine but seen a few clips on YouTube suggesting it's not anywhere near the Volvo Pilot Assist, but then I've seen a few clips suggesting it is!

Anyone with experience, your help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

US Owner here - but I can say it pulls you away from the white line or yellow line if you approach it. If anything it seems too sensitive to me. But it doesn't beep - it pulls - steers you away. If you're wanting to change lanes and don't have your turn signal on, it will fight you. I turn it off on country roads sometimes. It's good on the highway though. Travel assist is the next step up - does the LKA + ACC to pretty much drive on the highway. It does make you keep your hands on the wheel though. Cheers and enjoy your new ID.4!

thank you for the reply, very helpful. Sadly the 1st Edition doesn't have the Travel Assist option and as I understand it that just links ACC and LKA in one button. But surely you can just have the LKA on anyway automatically and then whilst using ACC on the highway, it basically drives itself and DOESN'T bounce between the lines like a bowling ball with the rails up?

It does a good job of staying centered in the lane in my experience.

ok thanks and you have the LKA not the Travel Assist? Sorry for being pedantic, I've spoken to a few dealers now, no test drives available for ID4's with LKA and half say the car won't keep it central on highway and half say it will. Marvellous!

As datwater cites, if anything the Lane Keeping Assist is a bit too sensitive. I've considered turning it off, but that one time it may be necessary it may come in very handy so I'll leave it on.
I have a regularly traveled secondary road where for a short stretch it widens to two lanes and then reduces back to one lane of directional travel. The sudden greater distance from the white line(s) confuses it and it pulls. But I'm now ready for same. On the flip side it's a good confirmation that the system is active.

Excellent thanks for the replies, sounds like the car will do what I want it to do, which is keep the lane on the highway with minimal input, yes hands on the wheel ready to react etc. but looks like it lane centres then.

Thanks again both.

You're welcome. Also, I have a tendency to sometimes travel a bit further from the right border line (USA) to avoid potholes and other times a bit further from the center line to accommodate wide/hogging vehicles. As it starts to pull me back I can't help thinking "yeah, yeah, I know, just cut me some slack." 😆

Translating "too sensitive" in my experience (7 days) of driving is that LKA seems to get a bit confused when a lane diverges into 2 new directions - like at an exit. Confusion is momentary, but still a thing. I haven't tried turning it off... as I've been busy fighting other button battles. But now I've got those mostly figured, this is next on the agenda.

Yesterday I tried the speed setting and ACC and this was something I actually liked. If it doesn't do so for you with a message commanding you to take over manual control, you'll want to turn it off if the traffic gets hot and heavy. But otherwise, it's pretty cool. Using ACC, LKA and all in heavy traffic is just a bit alarming in terms of figuring out (at least the first time) who's in control of what.

Even without these on, I found the car gets annoyed if someone cuts in front and reduces your following distance and will slow the car.

My last car was an Acura RDX 2014, so I've stepped forward about 2 decades in tech... and that's been a bit of an adjustment. Especially since I tended to not bother with the tech the Acura had for the most part. I mean, I'm a driver, right? Here, the ID4 pretty much requires you to integrate tech into your driving by default. And it's handy. FWIW, it took some work and I'm sure there's more work to do, but it's worth doing and not all that big a deal.

So I have spoken to 4 different dealers, 2 say the LKA will keep centred in the lane, the other 2 say I won't and only kicks in once you get cm's from crossing the white line 🤷‍♂️

there is a thread taking about the differences. I think lane keep assist is going to be more limited, and travel assist is needed for lane centering. ID.4 Travel Assist / Lane Assist

There is Lane Assist and Travel Assist for US cars which should be the same as Euro cars. Lane Assist is a passive safety device which only intervenes when trying to prevent drifting into another lane. Travel Assist is the lane centering function where you can take your hands off the wheel (temporarily) and it will continue steering.

Oh that makes things perfectly clear thank you. Seems a lot of people have Travel Assist on the 1st edition however this is not possible in the UK. Looks like the order is going to be cancelled 😭 Glad I found out now though.

Thanks everyone.

It only kicks in when you approach one side or the other lane line too much. It doesn't keep you perfectly centered at all times. That would be a nuisance and I would certainly turn if off in that case. It's a Lane Keeping Assist, not a Lane Centered Assist. So two of the dealers were correct. 🤪
Note however that if you have your directional signal activated LKA will not interfere. I'm pretty good about using mine so have confirmed same.

I've come to actually expect and appreciate that pull back to center, when I'm avoiding potholes or manhole covers in the road, it feels almost second nature to me already, where I move over to the edge of the lane to avoid the thing, and LKA basically "bounces" me back toward center automatically. I'm sure in some particular situations it would be annoying but I haven't run into any yet.

It would be nice to be able to turn off lane assist. But instead, you have to turn it off for each journey. I might be tempted to keep it on motorways, but it is rubbish on country roads, and difficult to switch on and off

Hello everyone. Does anyone know if there is a way to turn the lane keep assist default to “off” so you don’t have to do it every single time you start a trip? We love tge new ID4 we have purchased, just think the steering wheel could be smoother and the lane keep assist does not help. Thank you!
