I just purchased a new ID.4 and discovered the "new" tires had only 5 mm treads. The brand is Bridgestone Turanza 235/45 R21 101T. VW says this is new tires? What is correct, does Bridgestone deliver new tires with only 5 mm tread depth?

The minimum "good" tire tread depth in the USA is 6/32" or 4.7625mm (5/32" and below being poor and recommended near future replacement; 2/32" is Replace Now!!).

I've not measured mine but my new tires definitely had the tire-mould "nubs" on them so certainly were new-at-factory tires.

I prefer Michelin so if Bridgestone "value engineered" same just another good reason for me to replace. Will measure mine with one of those cardboard gauges that TreRack provides. You'd think I would have a decent depth gauge at this point. 🤦‍♂️

We don't get the Turanza or any 21" on any shipped here in the US yet, but it looks like it has little tread even when new:

Maybe the way they get the low rolling resistance they call Enliten to reduce weight by 20% is give you much less tread.

According to the US gov., most states require a minimum of 2/32 of an inch (approximately 1.6 mm)

US tread depth is usually measured in 32nds of an inch. 5mm equals about 6.3 32nds which is definitely on the low side for a new tire. Since EVs tend to go through tires like crazy, this definitely would be a concern.
