Car Recall Tracker Notification

You have 1 new recall

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Feb 1, 2023
A reset or deactivation may cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.
Summary:
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2021 ID.4 vehicles. Software programing may cause the high voltage (HV) battery management control module to reset or the pulse inverter to deactivate.
What should you do:
Dealers will update the HV battery management control unit and the pulse inverter control unit software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed March 31, 2023. Owners may contact Volkswagen's customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 97ZZ.
For more information:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

VW’s document says only 32 cars out of 20,000 are affected with the issue causing a stall - odds are quite low! That’s why it’s not a stop driving type of recall.

And unlike a gas car stalling (which has happened to me on highways) you don’t lose power steering and power brakes.

Because I own it, it is fantastic car and I have 33,000 miles on it.
Or, as the Engineer said, “The bridge never fell down while I was driving across it!”.

I entered the recall number and my VIN and it showed nothing but the title of the recall. Usually once the recall is announced NHTSA has the VINs involved. So I can now wait and see if my VIN suddenly appears.
My 2021 with a production complete date of Dec 20, 2021, also shows no recall yet on the VW or NHTSA site, but it looks like the deadline for informing owners about the recall is March 31, 2023, so we shall see.
I wonder if VW can minimize the number of recall notices by rolling the BMS fix into the software update campaign and updating as many cars as they can before their March 31 deadline. Try to alarm as few people as possible...

In the NHTSA document, it looks like the BMS software fix was implemented in all vehicles made after "CW49/2021" (Calendar Week 49, 2021, i.e. week of Dec 5, 2021) and for the pulse inverter software update all cars built after "CW20/2022"(Calendar Week 20, 2022, i.e. May 15, 2022). So if that's correct, then my car should already have the updated BMS software, but not the pulse inverter software. I guess I'll find out pretty soon whether or not that warrants a recall.
I took delivery of mine 7/1/22, Being it was built in Germany, slow ride on the boat, train ride up the west coast, showed up to the dealer middle of June, I’m assuming mine is Involved in the recall, guess I’ll wait and see.

not sure how to find excact build date, I’ll go to VW site today and search my Vin.
Your dealer can look up the exact build date in their system as well as all the other dates associated with your car like in service date, etc.

Here is that phrase again. Why are we so quick in this country to threaten the need for a lawyer every time there is a bump in the road? Nobody wins these things except the lawyers. I do remember getting a check for one of these actions years ago for $0.12 USD. Such a deal.

Notice I won't even type the 3 word phrase. Ridiculous.
Because, in some cases, its the only way to get action (whether remediation of a problem or compensation) from large corporations that would otherwise just bully, and screw the little guy. Without the spectre of class action, VW would have just paid their fine to the federal government for Dieselgate and just swept the little guy under the carpet. If companies like VW acted more responsibly, the need for entire classes to sue would be reduced.

But you never get action, even with a class action. The consumers may get something of nominal value, and the lawyers get rich.

My understanding from the NHTSA recall doc is that March 31 is the date by which they have to give notice to owners and dealers that a recall is under way; it is not the date by which they have to have the issue fixed.

The recall update might take a much shorter time to do than the huge 3.1 update, which involves like 36 different module updates. But that being said, it might make sense to roll the overall 3.1 update and the recall update into one service visit.
Interesting coincidence that Siemens exited it's JV with Valeo in the months leading up to the end of the manufacture date range associated to this recall (model year changeover and presumably change in modules).

ID.4 build dates of May 26, 2020 to January 20,2022 are included in this new recall.
and, from there:

ID.4 owners will be contacted toward the end of March by VW dealers to schedule the work
and, from there:
Sure but that's their reporters hot take on the same source material we're all looking at.

Good point.

That is why I am not overly anxious about this issue. I want it fixed of course, but this sounds less worrisome than the Takata airbags, the most concerning recall I have been affected by.

VIN range excludes all First Editions (position 4 = D)
I guess all of us early adopters are affected if going by build dates. I wouldn't count on the lack of a D in the VIN, the parts and software were all the same.

My First Edition build date is Feb 2020. I'm clear of the manufacture date window as well.
