I assume the worst and they're implying that the binnacle lights up like a Christmas tree while the vehicle simultaneously loses power.

I'm surprised they didn't write, "if your vehicle loses propulsion, immediately pull over."

Sorry this happened to you. I can imagine it's distressing, and would test my confidence in this car. Thankfully it's not a common report, but those who have experienced it seem to have had it occur more than once.

Welp, it certainly looked like a Christmas tree. I tried to take pictures of the alerts blinking through at the time but unfortunately, it wasn't the first thing on my mind when startled with the situation!

That is why I am not overly anxious about this issue. I want it fixed of course, but this sounds less worrisome than the Takata airbags, the most concerning recall I have been affected by.
Yeah - being sprayed by shrapnel is definitely the worst car-related recall I’ve heard of (since the Ford Pinto exploded when hit from behind)! Chevy Bolts flaming seat belts are pretty bad too… and of course, the Bolt battery recall where you can’t park it inside for fear of burning down the house. This far from the worst!

I'm in the same position as everyone who can't find their VIN in the NHTSA website listed for a recall.

So maybe none of our VINs have yet been entered?

Has anyone gotten a positive hit on their VIN in the NHTSA website?

(and, yes, I'll continue driving and loving my ID.4 in the meantime)
No, I suspect they will be loading them by the end of March, by which time we will have received the letter. Nothing to do now... but apparently gossip about it online ;)

My 2021 AWD stalled last October in the manner described in the email. Like others have posted, my VIN isn’t associated with any recalls when I look it up in NHTSA. Note, when this occurred for me, I did submit an entry on the NHTSA website.

It only happened once and the dealer did some sort of software reset. A second dealer visit (not occurrence) resulted in an ECM (I presume gateway control module) being replaced.

Does anyone know if the gateway control module is related to the BMS or pulse inverter?

While I love the ID.4, at this time, this will be my last VW vehicle.

But you never get action, even with a class action. The consumers may get something of nominal value, and the lawyers get rich.
I don't think that is a true statement. It is broad and biased, but not true. Class action suits have triggered companies to change policies and practices and have instigated government investigations.

My understanding from the NHTSA recall doc is that March 31 is the date by which they have to give notice to owners and dealers that a recall is under way; it is not the date by which they have to have the issue fixed.
That is correct - same thing for the previous battery recall for faulity soldering. the date communicated is only the date by which they have to send you a physical mail informing you of the recall, that letter can (and in the case of the battery soldering recall) can simply say "we know of the problem, but don't have a fix or a date of fix and we'll get back to you"

It shouldn’t be. This recall is talking about HV battery system components. The gateway module is what allows the car to take to the internet and systems beyond. It has its own issues but not this kind.

Try using this site to see if anyone gets anything. It's the VW site vs NHSTA.

Mine showed here as nothing either. Not that it means anything, but would think VW might load it before it gets to NHSTA.

Car Recall Tracker Notification

You have 1 new recall

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Feb 1, 2023
A reset or deactivation may cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.
Summary:
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2021 ID.4 vehicles. Software programing may cause the high voltage (HV) battery management control module to reset or the pulse inverter to deactivate.
What should you do:
Dealers will update the HV battery management control unit and the pulse inverter control unit software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed March 31, 2023. Owners may contact Volkswagen's customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 97ZZ.
For more information:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 23V040000
Potential Number of Units Affected: 20904
Hi all, my VIN looks like it’s in the affected range (damn) and we routinely travel freeway car pool lane between LA and Orange County to visit grandkids. The chance of suddenly losing power is scary to say the least. March 31 is 7 weeks out! Will VW (dealer or VW Cares (lol) step up with a loaner?

Anybody with ODB know if these component part numbers are visible? If so, would be interesting to see which trims we are finding them in.

Best to call VW and ask. The notice says they will make no payments associated with the recall. But who knows.

Where are you seeing affected VIN #s? Nothing on NHTSA or VW websites

VW’s document says only 32 cars out of 20,000 are affected with the issue causing a stall - odds are quite low! That’s why it’s not a stop driving type of recall.

And unlike a gas car stalling (which has happened to me on highways) you don’t lose power steering and power brakes.
Many drive with B mode like I do which will be quite dangerous.

It appears to be everything they made in Germany that was marked as a 2021. Not ALL of those cars came to the US though. So I read it as 'it affects 100% of the cars that we made in 2021 in this VIN range, but only some of those VINs were shipped to the US and are therefore covered by this recall'. Europe would presumably have a similar recall of somesort for the other VINs there.

Yeah, it's a loss of propulsion according to the document, not a loss of control.
