My ID.Cockpit is running very hot. We got our car a few weeks ago but we have not had the opportunity to use it much so I don't know if this is new or not but yesterday and today that display was very hot to the touch. This did NOT seem to be because of sun exposure; I first noticed it while parked on the shade with the car, with the car "almost shutdown" (I don't yet know how to truly shut it down manually). Same today, driving.

If this was a traditional computer I'd guess it is a process that is incorrectly consuming 100% of the processor. It has a display, and somewhere there is a computer driving it, but, still, I'm surprised. And in any case it does not seem normal.

thoughts? experiences?

It is a PRO, for what it is worth.

One on steering wheel or infotainment screen?
If you referring to one on steering wheel...there are some ID4's with this screen going bad...ask for service and advise service to use thermal imaging camera to pinpoint hot spots and report to VW.

Correct, the one on the steering wheel. I have an IR thermometer that I'll take to the car and I'll measure the temperature the next time but it was very hot.

Thanks for confirming the issue. I'm due for a service check on the car and I'll mention that.

Keep in mind that CPUs in particular run hot. Just checked the temps on various chips in my laptop (I run Linux OS) and most of them were in the 60 to 75 C. range which is pretty normal but would feel very hot to the touch. Depending on where they placed what chip in the steering wheel display module and how they chose to dissapate the heat, there may well be nothing unusual going on.

It depends on how the system is designed. An AirPod runs a variation of iOS and runs cool enough that you can put it in your ear. And several hearing aids run Linux.

Anyhow, next time you drive your ID.4, check out the display in the steering column and let me know how it feels. I'll be very if it feels as hot as mine. I have my IR thermometer ready to give you a temp reading the next time I drive mine.

Supplier is the same what you will find in BMW I3....it is software that needs updating...it is high end automotive quality regarding heat.
Thanks. Hopefully VW is using developers that know their stuff. We also have a 500E. Great components but the folks that did the software integration of all the components did NOT know how to program real-time systems. They did silly things like: "tell component to do X; wait N milliseconds to do it; assume it did" !!!! Real-time systems!! The "most" fun bug was when the interlock for the gear selector got stuck in the wrong mode because a transition took "longer than expected"; the result was that the car had to be fully rebooted, or had to be towed. Fun, fun, fun.

Obviously I am still sore for that one... :)

Anyhow, thanks for the info VW Technician!

My Speed Display on my ID.4 - which had to be replaced because of the "Blinking Cyan and Yellow" - ran extremely hot (regardless of the outside or cabin temperature). The new unit (which works, the blinking has stopped) - still runs hot, unable to tell if there is a temperature difference between the two units.

I measured 157F yesterday in a quick IR check. That's pretty hot (70Celsius). I have trouble believing that is "normal" and/or sustainable. I'll keep a record of temperatures and will report at some point.

If somebody can find the specs for the unit, I'd appreciate a link.

For the past couple days after reading about display temps, I’ve held my hand on both displays (normally just a tap or quick swipe) to discover extreme heat on both displays. This after the car sat in the sun a few hours. Nothing else was as hot such as door handles, steering wheel buttons, glass roof. I just tossed my IR temp device in the car for next drive.

To be fair, not many developers can write decent code for realtime systems. These things are easy to screw up and when there are problems they can be horrendous to debug. They might do something simple and naive when they are first developing the code, but they would need to circle back at some point and fix it for real.

I suspect that this is the underlying problem with performance that plagued earlier releases.

I remembered to check the temp of my steering wheel display after driving about 30 minutes this morning. It was pleasantly warm, but nothing more. I certainly didn't think anything odd about it. Outside temp was in the upper 70s and car had not been sitting in hot sun prior to the drive.

I just got my 2023 AWD Pro S, and the cockpit screen is extremely hot. The large entertainment screen was just warm by comparison. On the latter I reduced the brightness from Medium to Low, which should help, but I don't find anything about changing the brightness of the cockpit one.
For reference, I was driving for about 10 minutes with an outside temperature of 70F, on a partly-cloudy day.

Can you run infrared temp. camera pictures of this screen to see what is your temperature?

I do not have an infrared camera, but I will use an infrared thermometer tomorrow. I can tell you that when it starts heating up you can feel a big difference between the center of the screen and the rest of the screen. I have just had my ID.4 for 5 says, but already went into a 400-mile trip (round-trip) and in both legs of the trip the AI stopped working at some point after more than 2 hours driving, Each time it didn't come back until the next time I drove the car. I wonder if the processor for verbal commands and other functions is housed there...

Video recording with temperature sensor attached would be nice. Document this with enough evidence will help service department and engineering department. If you can easily reproduce issues it will be helpful and have appropriate ways to bring to the attention of service technician and good evidence for engineers.
Do you have obdeleven obd2?
If you have one can you post all modules scan, do not delete any errors or malfunctions if obdeleven collect any errors.

I recorded the temperature of the two displays and the dashboard surface three times, each time making sure ambient temperature is down in the cockpit display. The first time before driving out, still in the garage. The second time after driving a little over 30 minutes on a cloudy day. Ambient temperature went from 72F to 75F.
After almost an hour I drove back. Ambient temperature went up 1 degree, the cockpit display temperature rose to 119F. A/C was running, set to 73F. I can upload the videos somewhere, but this forum can't handle files that big, so I included snapshots.
