ID.4 vs Ioniq 5

I have a 2023 ID.4 AWD Pro S. I recently rented a Hyundai Ioniq 5 for two weeks while traveling around the midwest. I was excited to have it for so long to see how it compares! I am not sure what specific model Ioniq 5 it was, but have some clues. It was at newest 2024 (didn't have NACS charge port or rear wiper) and didn't have a glass roof, so it must have been SEL or lower trim. Given it's a rental my guess is it's the cheapest trip.

In a nutshell, I think they are comparable cars. There are some things that one or the other car is better at, but big picture, I would be happy with either. Here's some detailed thoughts.

Handling/Comfort: both cars are comfortable, quiet, smooth, and handle road bumps well. I had heard that the Ioniq's handling is tuned a little sportier -- but honestly, they felt similar.

Travel Assist: ID.4 is better. It is smoother and more predictable. The Ioniq would sometimes veer off on freeway exits, which the ID.4 rarely does. The Ioniq also slammed on the brakes one time for no apparent reason. I am glad that happened towards the end of the trip because honestly it made me nervous to use it afterwards! In heavy traffic that could cause an accident.

Fast charging speed: no surprise here, the Ioniq is better. I got over 230kW several times. More importantly, the charging curve is better -- even at 80%, it was still pulling 150kW. The end effect is that I charged from 25-80% in about 15 minutes once. The fastest I have done this in the ID.4 is, from memory, about 25 minutes. This may not sound like much difference, but the effect is that my wife and small child were happy to just stay in the car for that charging stop. That doesn't typically happen when it takes 25 minutes!

Software: Ioniq 5 wins. It doesn't have the lag issues my 2023 ID.4 does. I've heard that newer ID.4's are much better in this regard. Stupidly, I only brought along a USB-C cable, and the Ioniq has the old style USB port, so I couldn't use CarPlay. Oops! But satellite radio came in handy.

Rear wiper: ID.4 wins! No wiper in the Ioniq, though that's been fixed in the 2025 Ioniq 5. I can't believe they left it out before 2025.

Glad to answer any questions!

With a later model year Ioniq 5, both wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported. Thought it started with model year 2024 but maybe it is model year 2025. Should have been about the same model year the rear wiper was also added.

Ionig 5 also had 12V battery issues where they were being depleted on a regular basis. Not sure if this is the same lead acid vs. EFB+ vs. AGM battery issue that the ID.4 has or charging issue similar to 2024 ID.4 have in colder weather.

The 800V DC fast charging architecture is a plus but maybe limited to slower charging using Tesla Super Chargers.

Were you able to use the Ioniq 5 phone app to compare it against the My VW App?

I tested a 2024 Limited Ioniq 5. The audio sounded even worse than the ID4, but it was bluetooth connection. The suspension was nice on it. The HUD is really cool on the Ioniq 5 and I like the OPD generally better than the ID4's implementation. THe ID4 has a much better turning curve. If I could switch for free, I'd switch my 2023 Pro S to a 2023 Ioniq 5 limited. But the difference is not $5K as reflected by the asking price difference

I 100% agree that the OPD is much better in the Ioniq.

Also I really appreciate the turning radius in the ID.4! I noticed it immediately when I got back home, it’s so much better.

I compared the two before I bought the ID.4, both '25 models. I have pretty specific seat requirements and the VW was more comfortable. VW has a bit more space in the rear, but ultimately it was the seats that won me over. I didn't feel like I could be comfortable in the Ioniq for a whole day.
I owned a 23 Limited AWD and the ventilated seats were painful. I had to use a cushion which helped immensely. Without it, I could not drive more than 20mins without lower back pain and I have zero back issues.

Yes I loved it! A couple charging pics from different sessions:

Yup 230kW FLAT from 15-70% It would dip a little but still near 200 kW as I recall at 80%

Most times I was done charging in 12mins. Compare that to the Gen1 Rivian R1S I had after the Ioniq 5... 130 kW!!!! I once saw 190 kW but that dropped to 150 kW then 130 kW and that had a massive 131 kWh battery pack. It was painful to drive that vehicle long-distance.

I think if VW chopped the price by $10K it would be more competitive

Exactly my thoughts… when we bought ours in 2021, it was cheaper than a Mach E or a Model Y by a substantial margin. Today, the Equinox EV holds that value crown, but is seriously underpowered and lacks CarPlay/AA.

That’s at a constant 75mph, I think? Not sure of the speed, but it’s definitely a highway only test…
