I remember reading somewhere that the ID Light can be set up to show the charge status, but I can't seem to find that setting anywhere. I have tested at 2 EA chargers and at home via Level 1 (Waiting for my Level 2) and it doesn't work. Does anyone know where that setting is?

So it seems that it's on but only shows up when you first plug in to charge. I thought it was an always-on indicator to show the charge level - maybe that's a feature request.
last time i charged at L2 it was on all the time - the charge percentage is solid and the uncharged is dashed. to day in EA it was only on at the beginning and turned off after a few minutes. seem inconsistent to me.

Report it to E Mobility thread on this forum.
More people make posts here it will make more presence and pressure to E Mobility teams to start reporting to VW AG corporate what owners want in new updates.
Good luck.

Same here. It was driving nuts until I realized that the vehicle was still charging even though the ID.light was not showing it.

That combined - I think - with a location override on preferred hours. Or maybe not. I need to re-test the experience another day.

Really... how hard is it to design a user experience that deals with 99% of the common cases?

  • Set a timer - If you want to be fancy, be fancy, but I just need weekends and weekdays.
  • When pluging in, ask me "Do you want to override the timer?"
  • Show me if the car is charging (via both the ID.light and the indicator in the charging port).

My FIAT 500E, for all its faults, can do that, and it was a compliance vehicle.

I hope we'll see the ID light behavior corrected to remain on with 2.3. VW has specifically called out the ID light as much more capable of additional features so we'll set more down the road, but I'm looking for just the basics with this inaugural OTA.

Don't expect timer functionality to be fixed until 3.0 early next year. I agree, that was a huge blunder. VW knows it (it's been broken on the ID.3 this whole time, too). There's got to be something deeply complex there that they couldn't get this important function working on time for the ID.4 launch.

But you cant see the id light when standing at the front, only visible when you are facing towards the dash. So i understand the choice for shutting it off affer a while. In my usecase its worthless to have it always on. A push notification would work better for me

But then why have it at all. If it's an indicator, it should indicate, especially during a DCFC session where there is a good chance the driver will be sitting in the car. Or tie it to occupancy. Parked overnight, yeah, it could be a bit much.

As presently set up, I think it's a bit worthless -- yes, I know I'm low on charge, that's why I'm charging, so it doesn't really communicate any useful information in the few minutes it's illuminated right after I plug in.

Haha, don't we love our 500e interface. Simple and all info we needed.
I agree how hard is it to look at existing interfaces and replicate what people like, grrh.
I liked the dashboard 5 bars so everyone could see from the outside what the status was.
Btw I realized that to get the estimated charging time one has to turn off the car with button on steering column.

And the sound is better in the 500e too. Sorry had to say it even it does not belong in this section🙂

I was expecting the ID light to be on continuously when plugged in to charge also. That's really frustrating that it goes off after a few minutes. Not a difficult thing to make it show the status all the time when plugged in. And if you need to know charge status when not in or near the car, look at the app even though that really sucks. They need to rewrite that whole app interface. It's horrible. Can't even use it the way it is now.

The Id light usefulness was completely over promised in the early advertisements and reviews.it s current implementation is pretty lame

Agree. VW has said as much publicly, along the lines of "we plan to add features / capabilities to the ID Light in future updates."

An always on charging indicator doesn't even need to be the whole dashboard-wide bar, I'd bet they could isolate it to just a short, steady -burning segment that doesn't call ridiculous amounts of attention to itself and beckon passers-by to stop and peer inside.

i liked how fiat had setup the charging indicator. 5 orange bars (each for 20% increment) on top of the dashboard widely visible. this way one could easily see if a car was fully charged and sometimes unplug the cable (no locking of the plug, good old time :) ) and put it in your car if parking area allowed for it. no harm done. at the time L2 chargers were precious.

the ID light could be used to indicate the distance from the target in percent etc but i would be happy to get rid of it and invest the money on a better audio system or a better sounding horn.

I totally agree with the horn. It's really lame. Needs a better beep beep.

And I do wish they made the ID Light stay on when charging. Make it an option but yes it's there and a communication tool so how about using it. With the option to have it on or off in that case.

The ID.4 is like Herbie the love bug…it does whatever it wants to do, not what you want it to do. Logic does not matter. It is what it is unless they change the software in a few years…or not !
