So I need your opinions guys since alot of you have your id4 already. We have reservations in for both an ID4 Pro S and a Tesla Model 3 SR+. They both have similar range (250 vs 262) and similar amenities. A few questions I hope you can help with to choose which reservation to go with:

1) The ID4 date we were given is Jan 2022...was yours pretty accurate? How many total reservations do they have?

2) pros and cons vs the tesla model 3

3) What has been your build quality and reliability so far on the id4?

4) What don't you like about the id4?

1) Can't answer as I got mine off the dealer lot.

2) Pros: The Tesla charging infrastructure is much better, and the Model 3 has a frunk. Personally I don't care about the frunk. I have never had one and don't miss it. There is plenty of storage in the back of the ID.4 under the floor for the charging cables. Infotainment is more responsive than the ID.4. Power- the model 3 is faster all around, granted I have never feel like I was lacking for power with the ID.4. The ID.4 is noticably quicker than my wife's Tiguan.

Cons: Reliability, say what you will about VW, but Tesla is know for a lack of reliability and a lack of build quality. Space, the ID.4 is just a bigger vehicle. Multiple screens (subjective)- the ID.4 has a screen to show driver centric items. Everything is combined into a single screen on the Model 3. More traditional controls on the ID.4 (subjective). In my opinion the model 3 packs way too many functions into that central infotainment/driver info screen. Say what you will about the infotainment system in the ID.4 but at least I have some of my common controller behind the steering wheel, and available as capacitive buttons. Overly optimistic range estimates-if you look at independent range tests Tesla consistently significantly underperforms their sticker rating. Most other brands are within a few miles of their sticker ratings or exceed them.

3) It's a VW for the most part it's been great. A couple small bugs and quality issues (refer to the tail light bar bulging issue). However it seems very solid and we'll constructed inside and out.

4) I wish there were lights behind the capacitive buttons under the infotainment screen so you could see them at night. I wish that the OTA updates came quicker.

Fundamentally, I am happy with my selection of the ID.4 over a Tesla. I feel it punches above it's weight class. The interior is comfortable, and nice. The ride is good, and there is plenty of space. Also, while I believe Elon Musk has done great work funding SpaceX and for driving the electric car market to fruition, I cannot support Tesla. His deceptive practices with FSD, and blatantly manipulating the stock market really make me not like him, and not want to buy a car from his business. I mean how many years has it been where he has been promising FSD would be rolled out? VW may have dieselgate, but unless VW is secretly hiding a ICE somewhere in the hood their issues with combustion engines don't really apply to their electric vehicles. Infact I have found their (VW) range estimates to be relatively pessimistic.

I can give you the perspective of a Model 3 owner with an ID.4 reservation that is due for delivery in the next month or two. The two cars are aimed at slightly different customers.

The Model 3 has amazing performance and handling, is low to the ground and rides and feels like a sports sedan, which is what it is. You feel the bumps due to the low profile tires and firm suspension and there is a fair amount of road and wind noise. Seats are very comfortable, good storage in trunk and good sized frunk. It has advanced driver assistance which continues to improve. Over the air updates are at least once a month with new features being added. Amazing charging network, road trips are very convenient and easy thanks to the network and great charging curve. Plug and charge, no cards or apps needed. Rapid charging attracts a fee which varies by location. Sparse dealer network with 3-4 weeks appt time typical, poor customer service attitude, think entitled, getting someone on the phone next to impossible, they do communicate well via text, you'll never met the mechanic, you probably won't meet your service advisor either. However the mobile service is amazing, though appts can take 4-5 weeks. Shame mobile service can't meet all service needs. Mobile service will met you anywhere to service your car, home, work etc. You get to interact directly with your mechanic.

The ID.4 has average performance, I have held out for the AWD as I found the RWD to be under powered. The ID.4 has good handling and rides very smoothly and quietly, takes the bumps well thanks to the "normal" tire profile. Seats are comfortable, some trims have massage seats (the Tesla doesn't). Storage in trunk is very good, however there is no frunk. Driver assistance is OK, not as good as it needs to be. OTA updates are infrequent. Charging network is sub par, but improving in terms of reliability and number of locations. Charging speed is less than the Model 3 but actually pretty good with a great charging curve. No plug and charge, app required. Free rapid charging for three years with no cap, truly unlimited as far as we know. More service locations than Tesla. I have no experience with their customer service or appt lead times but would expect a traditional dealer service experience.

I've had my ID4 FE 4 months. I cancelled my Model 3 order after a test drive, primarily based on my strong preference for a SUV over a sedan.

I won't repeat what's already been said, but one obvious thing that differentiates these two is the $7500 tax credit.

Totally agree with the comments above. Different vehicles that target different customer groups. SUV vs sedan. And the 7500 dollars tax credit of course. I have already made my choice. Even though currently in the shop waiting for the coolant pump to arrive, I feel that I made the right choice.

I think you get more bang for the buck with the id.4
Tesla model 3 is like playing quality roulette. Really anything coming out of freemont. The Model Y is said to be much better, but as of now, I'd only consider a tesla that comes out of Texas, China, or Berlin.
VW quality should be more consistent.
Tesla engineering may have an edge. They built a true ground up car. MEB could be said to be ground up, but im not sure if thats the case (ie they likely had to go to the parts bin, and build off that) Software in Tesla is better over VW
VW still gets tax credits if your in the US
VW free charging for 3 years
VW dealer network and service network is greater
VW is said to be quieter than Tesla
Tesla is imho more fun to drive

disclamier: I do not own a tesla or vw. I have only test driven them. I will likely get the audi q4 etron sportback when they are released. I would like an ID.5 but doesn't look like they will be avail here.

As noted before, the Tesla model 3 is a sport sedan and a very different class and segment that VW ID.4, SUV. The typical comparison would be Tesla Model Y (or Frod Mach-E) and VW ID.4. Then the big difference is price:
  • Model Y (AWD, grey with tow hitch) $57,990
  • ID.4 (AWD, grey with tow hitch) $43,675 less $7,500 tax credit or $36,175
  • Difference $21,815 or 60% higher than ID.4
  • ID.4 Range 250 miles vs Model Y of 326 (real world 290-300)

I owned a 2018 TM3 Dual Motor prior to buying my ID4. I went thru same thought process regarding TM3 base vs ID 4. If short range TMY was still available that would have been my choice. I was trying to keep costs under 40K OTD including rebates and credits.

Short answer: If you live near a EA charger or don’t plan on road tripping ID 4 using EA network, if you don’t need an SUV, or if you don’t fully qualify for $7500 tax credit, get the Tesla it’s better in almost every category IMHO

Thanks but I think these are charging stations not dealers...besides I really don't care love my ID.4
Its a question of activating the right filter. If you select only service centers it will show you.

As a Model 3 owner as well, that’s actually a pretty good synopsis!

The wind and road noise are definitely a problem on my generation though could be better on newer ones with the laminated glass and other revisions. It is definitely sporty and that is good and bad. The seats are ok but a bit on the small side for me at 6’-1”. Autopilot is confounding. For as good as it can be, it’s maddening as well with the phantom braking and random automatic speed set point changes based on GPS position and map data.

I’m ready for something bigger and more comfortable and quieter without breaking the bank (cough $54,000 for Model Y)!

Again thanks for all the inputs guys. Having owned a long range model 3 for almost 3.5 years it's making the decision tough. We went and finally were able to test drive the id4 yesterday and it has a higher sitting position but I didn't feel ot was that much bigger. In terms of features, the two are also very similar other than android auto and carplay. I think the build quality is better on the id4 but the efficiency is better on the tesla side. After the tax credit both cars are the same price. This is a really touch decision but we will see what happens. I must say vw did an amazing job for their first ev

Are you replacing the current 3 or this next EV an addition to the current 3?

In addition, this will be wife's car. She has a bolt that we just sold because of the fires.

Best of luck in your decision. I am ready for something different after 2.5 years with a Model 3 SR+ mainly because of what it is - low to the ground, low seating, low roofline, sporty and all that comes with sportiness e.g. harsh and uncompliant ride, noise.
