I'm currently on a business trip and was given a '19 or' 20 Tiguan with wireless phone charging as my rental car.

My Samsung Note 20 Ultra well charge from the wireless charger but the battery percent seems to stay the same or drop slightly while charging this way and using android auto.

I did pickup a USB C to C cable and when connected to the Tiguan this way the phone battery % climbs as I would expect.

Did VW mage any improvements in the ID4's wireless charging amperage?

Apparently not. Others have reported the same scenario as you experienced where the phone doesn't gain battery percentage and they overheat.

If I need to charge my iPhone 12, I use the cord. My phone gets way too hot.

As other astute members have informed/reminded us the ID.4 charge mat, as most vehicle charge mats, has a sweet spot for charging alignment and if not precisely within same there are low charge and phone overheating issues. Therefore your USB-C cable is a better option. Or for iPhone users a USB-C to MagSafe as it only magnetically attaches to the iPhone in that precisely aligned location.

So it appears this will not be resolved as common across many marques/models. One wonders why they even bother to include same. Marketing a feature that doesn't work most of the time would seem negative marketing. But then so is scheduled charging. 🤷‍♂️

I removed my iPhone case last night, and removed the rubber mat on my wireless charger. My phone still heated up and was losing percentage as I drove, only using bluetooth audio. (Barely a draw...) The wireless charger is incredibly inefficient, moreso than any other Qi charger I've ever encountered. How can they be using something so poor in this car? I don't even have a big, powerful phone, just a little iPhone SE2.

Thought I'd follow up on this. I've had the ID.4 for a few days now and initially had the heat and slow/no charging issues when putting my Note 20 Ultra in the charging cubby... I was setting it in there head first.

Over the past day and a half I've been putting it in the cubby bottom first. This seems to result in a better alignment of the coils between the phone and the charger. Much less phone heating and the phone is actually gaining battery charge while in the cubby.

So perhaps others who have had the issue might try flipping their phone 180 degrees and see if it also helps with your charging?

I tried this and it actually worked for me. I got a full charge and my iPhone 12 Pro and it was just slightly warm in my hands not crazy hot like before.
