We wouldn’t be able to drive non-Tesla EVs on road trips. How ironic. The only nationwide non-Tesla DCFC network came about because VW cheated on emissions.

What the hell has the federal government and the department of transportation been doing about making road trips possible in EVs all these years?

I assume that was a rhetorical question?
It could stay rhetorical unless someone knows what the hell were they thinking all these years.

That campaign donations from oil interests get them re-elected?

Of course you could also ask why the federal government has any responsibility in making EV chargers available rather than the free market doing it. But that should probably be rhetorical as well.

@jatrax I love how in America many people feel most sorry for the richest corporations. I for one am smarter than that and you are obviously too. But my friends who are heavily invested in oil? 😭

Too bad for them they have $$$ but can’t drive worth a S&@#! 😓

I’ll retort with another rhetorical question, “Why does the federal government have any responsibility in building out and maintaining the interstate highway system rather than the free market doing it?”

I think it's fair to say the move towards more EVs was coming regardless of which party was in control. If the party in control was more likely to be environmentally conscious - then it would likely occur sooner. Also, COVID-19 actually caused more folks to consider replacing their ICE with an EV, thanks to supply disruptions and OPEC reducing oil production - thus causing a spike in gas prices. Those of you in CA can attest to having paid nearly $7/gal. and in Mendocino County - some may have paid over $9/gal. Is it any wonder why CA leads the country in EVs/capita? 😕

I remember paying $1.14 per gallon during COVID in the summer of 2020. The crazy gas prices last summer were unlikely caused by COVID. Not to go into political discussions here, it seemed that the overemphasis on fast transition to renewable energy both in Europe and in North America and abandoning the idea of energy independence was what caused the insane spike in the price of oil, gasoline, and natural gas. I was in Canada last summer, so I paid more for gas than those who live in California.

That $1.14/gal. was probably due to plentiful oil supplies and a lack of demand, as many businesses and governments went into lock-down and their employees worked from home (if they could.) Once the demand increased and the supply decreased - well you know the rest.

Judging by the state of some of these interstate highways, they are, in fact, maintained by the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Maybe it's because in America we have faith in the unregulated the free market system to the point where any sort of restriction on our "rights" is met with outrage.

Simpler example than charging stations is the location of charging ports on EVs. The non-standarized fuel connection locations on ICE vehicles have been an obvious hassle for 100 years; you would think that the NHTSB would have issued a ruling when the EV-1 came out specifying where the charging connectors are to be located. It would have had minimal impact on the cars, and would have made life so much easier. But nope, even a simple thing like that is impossible.
