Infotainment “gone”

Well, this is strange.

Today, my ID.4 Infotainment seems to have disappeared. The screen itself shows something — the clock mostly in 4 different styles — but navigation, CarPlay/Android Auto/App-Connect has vanished. I can’t get into vehicle settings.

Parking, climate, drive control, and others work.
Pardon the fingerprints— I was trying to debug.
You think resetting the 12V battery will help?

Have you tried pressing/holding the power "button" (lower left corner of your photo) for 10 seconds to initiate a infotainment reset?

Chances are when you get back to your car this will have taken care of itself, but if not, try that -- it cures almost all ailments!
Well, I waited 5 minutes, and true enough, the Infotainment system is back.

I’m guessing this is the equivalent of the car “rebooting” itself?

I did find it strange that I had to lock the car using by the fob. The touch to lock door knob wasn’t responsive. And the AC/climate control seemed to be running still.

The same thing happened to me the second day I had my car. It drove okay so I took it to the dealership and found out that I had somehow put the car into "Service Mode". At least now I know how to avoid that and get it back if it happens again.
Sometimes I like to turn the "TeeVee" off, put up the old-timey looking VDO clock and drive. It's really kind of relaxing.
Infotainments are failing. I am in week 3 of its entire failure.

@genux I'm just making sure you know that you can get to that clock screen if you hold down the Infortainment button for a couple of seconds...which turns off the main infotaiment screen and it reverts to the clocks, just as you described. I equate it to turning off the Infotainment screen as @Tinman noted.

I'm not sure once you "power off" the infotainment screen like that if locking and unlocking the car will revert the infotainment back to normal state. I know you said your's reverted to normal display, which is good. I just don't know if that means you experienced a bug which car recoverd from or you just saw normal functionality. I'll test on my car in the morning.

What is VW doing for you?
They said to take it in, and they can run full diagnostics. I’m still only on week 2 of ownership.

Im interested if this is something I can also help troubleshoot/address in case it happens again, and not at home.

Thank you. I did not know of this behavior.

I’m still learning the different menus, as some options seem to be gated behind the ignition switch being turned on.

While poking around earlier, I noticed it “reboot” on its own again while I was parked, and the screen briefly flashed the Volkswagen and 1st Edition splash screen before going back to the menu showing different buttons.
I am hopeful that the upcoming OTA update will take care of these issues most of us encounter.

In my two tests this morning, after turning off Infotainment, locking and unlocking car...when I got back in and woke up the display, the clocks were still shown. So it appears that the intent is to not reset the infotainment to "on" everytime the car goes from sleep to wake state.

@genux Had you by any chance tried to push on the Infotainment power key after clocks were present when you were troubleshooting? It would be interesting to know that the display was unresponsive to the normal functionality. I'm also still wondering if you could have accidentally previously "turned off" the Infotainment and then it reset to normal display state due to another reason (like the car resetting for any number of reasons not related to the Infotainment clock being displayed). Since no one else has reported the clocks as a bug I'm still wondering if this event showed a bug or just user error.
this is the infotainment "off" state. just hold the power seconds for 2-3 seconds
I'm occasionally having a similar issue - screen doesn't boot up on start and is completely blank. The power button on the lower left of the screen only turns on/off the audio and does not reboot the screen. I confirmed this with the dealer, so I don't understand all of the comments about powering off the screen. The dealer recommended to get out of the car, lock it, move far enough away that it doesn't sense the key fob, then try again. I haven't tried yet. What I've done so far is to leave for 5 minutes, and every time that works.

Blank screen is a known bug and discussed in other threads, but the OP was reporting the infotainment showed a clock on the screen instead of normal graphics. The clock isn't a bug and can be shown by pressing the infotainment power button.

This only confirms the dealers can be terrible sources of info. I wonder if they have their own forum to discuss things they're curious about?

If charitably a dozen members here have posted to press the A/V power "button" for 10 seconds to reboot the infotainment in response to a blank screen, and it doesn't work for you, why wouldn't you have requested clarification? The screen doesn't even need to be locked up or blank to try this.

I can't believe a dealership employee would suggest getting out of the car in lieu of something so simple.

OK then, please clarify, because I have tried it and all it does turn the radio off.

So to be sure, were talking about the capacitive button below the screen to the left of the volume sliders.

Firmly hold a finger squarely on that button for about 10 seconds and a beat — right up until the screen changes state.

And that's it! I've used this a few times so know first hand it has reset any problem with infotainment I've come up against. My wife, the primary driver, has reported using it on a handful of occasions, and even my youngest kid knows about it and will demonstrate it to any audience he can muster because he thinks it's a hack or a secret.

But I'm very curious why it's not working for you. Does the button in your car work correctly to mute audio with a quick touch?

Yes, the button on the bottom left. Yes, it "mutes", or turns off the radio. The last time the screen was blank, I kept my finger firmly on it for over 10 seconds and nothing happened. I'll go try it right now to see what happens.
Just tried it, and yes, it did reboot! The screen was working when I did this, so it was easy to see what was going on. It's possible that when I tried it before, I couldn't see anything so I was working blind, and assumed it didn't work, but the screen didn't come back on. Next time the screen fails to boot, I'll try the power button first, and if that doesn't work, try what the dealer recommended next.
