While similar discussions are occurring of completely blank screens or crashing infotainment systems...

I have a new issue on my ID4:FE that appeared 4 days ago & has not cleared. The main nav buttons across the bottom work. Hand Wave gesture works too. The screen detects my finger (by brightening), but when you want to execute a function the screen does not respond.
Example(s):
~ If you press climate. Climate Screen appears. However only the top 3 tab functions can be navigated. Any button or adjustment below, the screen "senses the finger" but the actually execution of a function won't (such as the "Air Care" You can activate the tab, but the button on the upper left is just far enough below the start of the DEAD ZONE).

~ If you press Travel Assist. The car, sign & lane are all live at start up. If you want to shut off lane assist by press 'any' line on the screen. The screen senses the finger by brightening. However it will not open the next tab to turn the switch. IF you do get a sweet spot in the upper left corner, the actual switch is below the line IN THE DEAD ZONE.

Yes, I have attempted a reset of the screen power. No luck.

Still, the amount of functionality lost is outright dangerous. This car already BY default has lane assist on when going into D/B. It has proven it cannot follow the especially crappy line painting it will encounter. It is a real safety issue.

If you get into the map, it is a dead end. the HOME button is in the dead zone.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Car is scheduled for service at a dealer Monday AM. It is too bad. Dealer in no way has a loaner for me either.
Time to open another Customer Care trouble ticket.

i had screen trouble too today.

this morning when i started driving i noticed the infotainment screen stayed black.
i pulled over, left and locked the car, restarted but same black screen.
after 10min driving i parked the car for about 30min and then when i started it up it was on again - all good.

during the dark screen time
the radio still worked and could be turned on and off and volume change on the control panel below the screen

is that a know issue or do you have any tricks on how to get the screen on again if this happens?

i called the dealer but they had no advice. i also send it off to customer care.

Yes, blank screen as you describe is a known bug (not related to @Mark Magiera 's hardware problem desctibed in this thread). You can try to fix by pressing and holding Infotainment power button for 10 seconds until screen reboot. That usually works.

I've had one black infotainment screen. While I was driving, I simply held the power button down (bottom left corner of display) for 15 seconds. The screen rebooted and has been fine since. The process did not interfere with the car's driveability. I attribute it to a software glitch that is similar to what I've periodically had with computers and laptops over the years. I anticipate the situation will improve as the software updates and matures.

I just had my screen replaced for the same reason. The next day, it happened again, but cleared up shortly after. I think it happens when I put it into gear too quickly after getting into the car. I need to take a pause.

I am having the exact same issue. Screen shows whatever screen I happen to be on, but won’t register my touch. Called the dealer today. I am very interested to hear what happens to you. Thanks!

Timing is everything. Scott, I saw your video upload. I have experienced the same exact thing as you are. The result reaction by VW is "replacement." You will learn that "there are no replacements in the US inventory" and that they "have no ETA for a replacement." Unless, you open a trouble ticket with Customer Care for a dead screen (under warranty).

Mine started to die second week of July, where the lower 75% of the screen became dead. By the weekend, the whole thing was died. That weekend, my car bricked (ECU died) & there is a long thread of that nightmare on this forum.

I would ask (as a test), if you look at the top bar, use your finger to sweep down. If nothing happens, the screen is dead to the touch. Contact your local service & book an appt for this Warranty Issue. The Pro S is a different sized screen than the FE. Ours is not the first.

It took about 2 weeks for the replacement screen to be shipped over from Germany (or at least taken out of the cue to go into a new IDx). My replacement arrived to VT on 8/23 & I already had a tentative replacement date for replacement for today (8/25). So my suggestion is to schedule the earliest for you to get the car to Service. Once they get it in Service & try to diagnose it, the ball will start rolling for a 2-3wk wait to replace it.

Look on the forum for the Voice Commands we've been finding along the way that will help. Key word search: Muddle

Thanks Mark! I spoke to my dealer on Monday, and am bringing the car in soon. I asked about part inventory if that was needed, and they guessed the same two weeks. Thanks for tip on opening a customer care ticket. I know my service rep said they planned to open a ticket with VW for this, so I will find out from them if that is the same thing or if I should do something myself.

And yes, swiping down from the top does not work. However this morning when I started the car the screen worked fine for about 3 minutes before once again becoming non-responsive. Fun times! At least I can get in to carplay at will and thankfully there are real physical buttons for changing temperature. So while this is annoying and frustrating, you can mostly go along as normal until it is fixed.

I had one moment of the light about two weeks after it became inoperable. I was driving home from work and the thing worked fine. So in that time I reestablished the link with my Android phone. And then when I got home it stopped working and hadn't work since.

I'm at the dealership right now and the screen has been replaced. It's working totally fine for me knock on wood. However yesterday as discussed in a different Forum discussion there is the message that the car needs service in 1200 miles or 180 days. They told me that I could clear it myself. But when I got in the car I couldn't. So I walked right back into service and said yeah I can't clear this. So they've driven it back into a bay and I think they're trying to figure out themselves on how to clear it. Because it seems that this 10000 mile service instruction hasn't been released to service yet.

Update here: my dealer got a replacement screen in the car (4 days for part delivery). I pick it up later today. There were no error codes or anything like that. Their tests show things working normally now, hopefully it works long term.

I haven't had any instances where part of the infotainment screen was unresponsive, but it has experienced several hard reboots while I've been driving. Last Friday morning, it completely crashed and I tried holding the power button for 10 seconds to no avail. I also left the vehicle for about 45 minutes and it was still blank. When I returned to the vehicle I held the power button until it started and it took about 30 minutes. No issues after that over the long weekend, but I didn't drive the vehicle very much over this time. This afternoon after work, it hard crashed again and it took about 15 seconds of holding the power button to start the infotainment system. Fortunately, I already had an appointment to go to the dealership today for the infotainment system and the seat belt recall. They're ordering a new infotainment system and they're going to give me a call once it arrives. I personally believe that it's a cooling issue with the system, but without any data, it's just speculation on my part.

Had the issue with an unresponsive screen today. Gestures didn't work, home button didn't work. It was stuck on an FM radio station that was doing an infomercial segment. Turned the volume down on the steering wheel. I did try holding the power button, but maybe I wasn't holding it long enough to make it reboot.

The car sat for about 2 hours at our destination. We came out to it and it booted up just fine and is working normally again. Appears to be a software glitch. Look forward to VW getting OTA working in the US and the next version of software with (hopefully) fewer bugs.

I had an unresponsive screen upon delivery. It took about a week to get a new part because I couldn’t even get it off the dealership parking lot. (so much for dealer prep). I did contact Volkswagen right away and ended up having them pay for the first month of payments on the car for the inconvenience.

I have had most of the issues described in this thread. When I went to pick up car, screen was frozen and could not be accessed or changed. They changed screen and off I went. Several months later I had the climate control disappear for a trip, magically reappeared after end of trip and charged the next day. Recently the entertainment portion became unresponsive. I fixed that by doing the reset of holding down power for 10 seconds which resolved issue.

My niece dates a Tesla manufacturing software designer and we were discussing this at dinner a few days ago, he said that Tesla tracks issues like this from other manufacturers and makes sure their software is not susceptible to the same issues.

That is likely the real cause of all of these issues- Tesla is not really a car company, they are a data company that collects everything from their cars and as such can rapidly diagnose issues and repair them.

Chevy, Ford and VW are car companies to whom the data is secondary and their software suffers for it. They will take longer to fix issues because everything is retrospective and they cannot do OTA updates and data downloads yet. Why do you think they require us to have scheduled maintenance visits? Because currently they are the only way to get car data. Right now they lag badly in software ability and real time knowledge of their vehicles. Mechanically, the cars are put together better, but from a software standpoint, they lag badly. And all these issue point to software deficits. Not hardware.

Tesla has figured out that we want refrigerator reliability in a car- it always works. Vw, et al, are still making beta software with final build quality vehicles.

My infotainment display has been less responsive over the last few days. Reboots have done nothing. I’ll call dealership Monday am. How safe or dangerous is it to drive when losing touch? I will have about 50 mile drive to dealership. I wish I could phone it in and then take it in when display replacement has arrived but have tried with another issue with no luck.
