The ev purchase incentives got chopped. However, money for ev chargers survived. They say there will now be a separate bill for ev purchase incentives. Anyone have any info on this? My blue id4 already shipped, arriving at dealer soon. Hoping to purchase it (or one) by December!

Don't wanna purchase one then have a sweet incentive come available lol

The incentives which have apparently been removed from the bill were above and beyond the original $7,500, however that extra money came with a couple of stipulations; in order to qualify for the additional credit, the vehicle you're purchasing must be a) build in the US and b) built by union labor. Presuming any new bills would include the same language/stipulations, current ID.4s wouldn't qualify as they are built in Germany. Once the Tennessee plant gets up and running this may change.

The way I understand it the current credit is still good until VW sell a certain number of units. In that infrastructure bill they had hoped to expand it to include companies like GM, Tesla who used up their credits some time ago. I think congress is trying to attach it to a different bill. In short, I think you are good.

No one knows when or if the new incentives for EV car purchase will come. First time I heard of the bill was probably in March or April, then it stalled, which is why I ended up getting the ID.4. If the bill passed early on and the incentives was $7,500 + $2,500 (American made) + $2,500 (UAW company), I would have probably went with a Tesla or some other EV car for a minimal of $10,000 incentive.

You can't always predict when it'll come and how soon you actually want the vehicle. You can always wait and wait and some other incentives might come along.

I ordered my First Edition back in September. At that time my worry was that the existed tax credit law might be overturned after the election. Or that they might put an income cap on the credit if the reverse election results occurred. Since I withdrew money from a tax deferred account in order to purchase the car, I will have an abnormal income for 2021.

I'm pretty sure the ID4 would not qualify for the extra EV incentive even if it is built in the US as the Tennessee VW Plant is NON-Union.

I don't think the congress will pass another $2500 or $5000 on top of the existing incentives for a >$45k car. I think there will be price/income caps/phase outs. The proposed bill (American made/union made) has little chance of passing and could be against WTO regulations.

Extra incentives are not in this infrastructure bill…..Neither is the elimination of the 200K car limit (Tesla, Chevy right now). The only thing that it really included is $7.5B for charging infrastructure and another set of $7.5B for EV buses, etc.

The dems are claiming they want those other incentives ($2.5K for US made, then another $2.5K for union made) and the production cap per manufacturer lifted in a future bill, but we’ll see what they can get passed. They may add it to the human infrastructure bill that they’re already putting forward…..

Which is just plain dumb. The infrastructure bill is widely supported by US citizens and desperately needed.
It passed the Senate..it will pass the House,
But fasten your seatbelts. It’s going to be a bloody fight. If the Democrats win, it could be the most productive legislative session since the New Deal. It’s huge.

If $7.5 Billion comes to fruition for fast charging infrastructure, that's more than three times the investment Electrify America brought to the table from Dieselgate. It won't make them ubiquitous overnight, but it's great start. If....

Electric school buses and USPS fleet is such a no-brainer, it's sad we're not well on the way to universal implementation already.

The bill probably forced Tesla to open its supercharger network, so it will have an overnight impact.

As proposed, the limits are a bit tight and don't make much sense in the current market. But as a starting point, aiming low makes sense.
I think it is inevitable that such limits on the tax credit are introduced. If we arrive at a 120,000-150,000 income limit and $50,000 price limit (or maybe a tad higher), such limits make a lot of sense and will funnel money where it is needed for mass scale EV adoption.

I think a $40,000 price limit will force manufacturers to come in under that number. VW, Tesla, and several others already do. An EV for close to 30k will appeal to many consumers, especially if there are other state incentives to make it even cheaper.
