I haven't used the vehicle chargepad since I early on got a 'high temperature, don't use until cooled' alert on my iPhone.

Rather I've been using direct USB-C and more recently an Apple MagSafe disc connected to mochalatte's well designed & 3D printed holder. The sole downside to this approach has been having to remove my prior aftermarket phone cover to "stick" to the MagSafe. I recently decided to splurge on a genuine Apple MagSafe cover to avoid removing and also provide an even better degree of magnetic adhesion due to the cover's integral magnetic ring. Given Apple it's also a much nicer quality of ergonomic plastic (it should be for the price

So that got me to thinking that perhaps the MagSafe cover would better allow the iPhone to 'find' the precise alignment we've determined necessary to best utilize the chargepad. I could feel a bit stronger attraction at one location on the pad, but not dramatically so with the foam pad in place. Alas I found no better a charging experience.

However I really need to do so on a much longer drive and also test without the foam pad in place. I have such an opportunity upcoming this weekend so will further detail thereafter.

Anyone else tried same?

I just tried it--yeah, no magnetic alignment for me either. That would be great if the iPhone MagSafe magnets would help align to a Qi charger, but I don't think that the Qi standard includes any magnetic alignment--not that I can find.

Here's the 3D printed option Huey52 is referring to if anyone is interested:

With the new iPhone 13, the phone's lens area has gotten larger due to larger diameter lens. The iPhone 13 cases have a larger lip that sticks out as a means of protecting the lenses from getting scratched.

The downside is the MagSafe mount provided by the mochalatte holder is compromised by the larger lip on the newer cases. A solution is to line the MagSafe holder with felt pads so when the MagSafe disc is inserted, it sticks out from the holder by about a 1/16 of an inch and allows the MagSafe disc the clear the lens protection lip on the case.

Once the felt pads are inserted, the iPhone magnetically connects to the MagSafe disc without issue. I recommend that mochalette modify the MagSafe holder so when inserted the MagSafe disc sticks out from the holder instead of being flush. The felt pads are a good work around to raise the MagSafe disc.

Yep, Joe sent me some pictures and I'm coming up with a solution. Thanks Joe!
Do you have a mount similar to this, without the magsafe, but still having the ball portion. There are tons of 3rd party mounts that use the ball and socket type joint to connect the phone holder to the mount — and I have quite a few of them. I just need the mount portion so I could use them in the ID.4. I think the standard size of the ball is 17mm diameter.

Here's the solution I came up with for non-MagSafe phones:

You still need to purchase your own ball-swivel magnetic mount (the URLs for some options are contained in the listing's description). The idea with this listing is just to give you a really good place put your own 3rd party mount in a out of the way place where you can still see your phone and without having to apply the mount directly to your car.

I don’t think any of the items linked in the description are available any more. Is the idea that you attach a mount to it with VHB tape? Would something like this work?

That looks like it is about a 3 inch square pad, which is much larger than the 1.25" diameter of the pedestal wedge.

Thanks for alerting me to the turnover on Amazon phone mounts. There are still some options there, like this one, this one, or this one.

Thanks for the links. Magnetic mounts aren’t my favorite, unfortunately, so I’ll have to find a smaller option that will fit your non-Magsafe mount better.

Ah, got it, not magnetic. I'm seeing the same thing as you that all the non-magnetic options seem to want a bigger base. If you don't find anything, send me a direct message me and maybe I can create a larger pedestal that will work for you.
