Hello

I am new to this forum. I am having issues with the charging speed of my new ID.4

I have recently bought a 2022 ID.4 Pro S. I installed a level 2 charger at home, "JuiceBox 40". The charging speed was fine for the first couple of days, and it was charging at 33 miles per hour. But when I tried to charge it today, it was charging at a very slow speed, 4 miles per hour.

1) Vehicle was parked in the garage. The outside temperature was 40 - 45 degrees.
2) I did not plug in the charger overnight.
3) I plugged in the charger in the morning, and the charging speed was at 4 miles per hour from a level 2 charger.
4) I took the car to the dealership and charged it with their DC charger, which was working fine and charging faster 40% to 80% in 1 hr and 20 minutes.
5) But when I plugged the car into my home charger, it was back to a slower speed.

At first, I thought it could be due to a cold battery from frigid weather overnight. I took the car out for a ride for at least 30 minutes to warm up the battery. But the charging speed did not increase from 4 miles per hr.

I'd appreciate any suggestions and help!

Have you checked to make sure the Charge Current setting didn't get set to Reduced mode?

You can check it in the myWV App, select Battery and then scroll down to Charge Current. It should be set to Max. If it's set to Reduced, then the charging current will be capped at 10A, so even at 240V, that's only 2.4KW, which is just barely better than level 1 charging speeds.

Edited to add that the Charge Current setting only applies to AC charging. You mentioned successfully charging at the dealer with a DC charger, but that wouldn't be affected by the Charge Current setting.

I have this problem every now and then (2021 Pro S AWD, JuiceBox). On the Juice Box App I should see 9kW but sometimes it's at 3kW. I unlock the car with the fob (even if it's not locked), pull the charger out, wait 30s or so for the charger to go back to standby, then plug it back in. JuiceBox app always shows 9kW after that.

After its slow, try removing the plug, wait 10 seconds, plug in again. Or open the drivers door which wakes it up before you plug in. Some chargers have trouble with the initial handshake that sets the rate when the car has gone to sleep. Is your SOC > 80%? This will slow down any charge rates.

I tried your suggestion. The speed went up to 33 miles per hr for one second and then back to 1.5kw

How is the charger connected to 208/240, like wired directly to the panel, or plugged into a power outlet (new outlet, or pre-existing?). How long is the cable run from the panel to the charger? To me it sounds like the charger is throttling due to some condition it's seeing. Or a faulty charger.

Good luck and welcome to the forum. :)

May want to try another Level 2 charger to eliminate the car as the culprit. You can use PlugShare to find a Level 2 near by that you can use.

The charger at the dealership was a fast charger and uses different circuits and connections than a Level 2. Basically it is AC v DC.

Hello,

Thanks! The technician wired it to the new panel. I have attached the pictures

Well the install definitely looks professional. I guess your next step (as mentioned previously) is to try a couple other Level 2 chargers in your area and see how they perform. If they work ok it might be time to talk to Juicebox.

Also, dumb question but have to ask, are you sure you’re plugging the charger all the way into the car?

I'm sure your installation is fine because EVSEs will only send a cutoff signal (or open their contactors) when they detect a fault. I'm not aware of any EVSEs that will attempt to throttle available current to accommodate a fault.

However I am suspicious of EVSEs such as the Juicebox which use a "soft" amperage adjustment (where the user can set different amperages, vs. this being "hard coded" into the box) -- it seems the reports like yours of intermittent slow charging are associated with these types of EVSEs, and there's some breakdown of protocol that's causing the box and the ID.4 to get tripped up.

I’ve had it happen a few times. The charger wasn’t firmly locked into the car.

I have had this issue with my 2022 Pro S AWD & Juice Box 40. First time I unplugged. Sice, stopping charge & restarting on Juice Box App has resolved it.
I'm curious if you've tried stopping and restarting on the VW app? Same effect?
