I just recently got an EV (Model Y), and today was the first time I needed to charge it.

The consensus in the Tesla forums is that it should always be plugged in when parked in the garage (if possible). The recommendation is to set the maximum charge level at 90% (supposedly endorsed by Musk), but many recommend to set the limit to 80%, 75%, or even 70% and only charge above that level occasionally (when charging for an out-of-town trip).

i thought that the EV should sit in the garage unplugged as long as it’s been charged to the pre-set maximum level.

What’s the consensus here on keeping the ID.4 plugged in or unplugged once it’s has been charged?

The car stops electron flow when the charge limit is reached, leaving it plugged in won't hurt a bit. But you do reap a few benefits: If you decide to precondition the cabin, it will pull electricity from the wall instead of from the battery. If it needs juice for anything else and falls below the charge limit, say an OTA update comes in and on-board electronics work hard for a while, it will also pull from the wall and replenish the battery. There are only positives in my book.

Keep it plugged in if < 46F or >85F so that the BMS can keep the battery in that range and ready to go without using the car's battery capacity to get it there.

What about surges in the AC circuit, especially during lightning storms?
I like my whole house surge suppressor that is mounted like a breaker in the main box. Its protected me from some nearby strikes, and we get a lot of hits around me. But you never can predict where lightning will go if its nearby enough. You could run out and unhook your charger if you get a predicted big storm.

There's no need to keep it plugged in anytime it's in your garage. That's only if you're leaving it undriven for multiple days or if you want to precondition the cabin before departure every morning without discharging the battery. Be sure to disable sentry mode for your home location. Sentry mode is a power hog.

80 or 90% isn't going to make or break the battery.
