Bought first Bolt in 2017, GM bought it back in April 2021 due battery fire recall, then bought 2021 Bolt thinking all would be good. This week a eerily similar battery fire in a 2020 Bolt. Sold my Bolt to Carmax next day for mire than I paid since I got an incredible deal in April.
Anyway, can anyone tell me if there is a strong likelihood of battery fires becoming an issues in the ID4 as they began getting a couple years on them. How similar to the 2021 Bolt battery is the ID4 battery? I have test driven the ID4 and liked it ok. Pros and cons over my Bolt Premier. Any techies that might explain why the ID4 is less likely to experience the battery fires than my Bolt?

We've only had our ID.4's in the USA for just over 5 months now, so ... But no reports that I've seen of any battery fires.

We also lack that level of insight on the materials/construction of the Bolt vs. ID.4 batteries so can't compare. Perhaps at some point there will be more details on the Bolt situation although they're likely at present being very careful with their data given potential litigation.

It's quite understandable that a former Bolt owner would ask these questions as part of their due diligence and especially so as not to again "get burned." [sorry, just had to]
But again we lack that longevity and level of insight.

VW has of course conducted accelerated wear tests and deemed their battery more than acceptable. But then of course so did Chevy.

For what it is worth, the ID3 was out in Europe just about a year ago. But no battery fires that I have heard of there either.
Thank you Huey52. Yes, getting “burned” twice has made me gun shy! The alternative is back to ICE and the thought is unappealing. I like a tall hatch/small SUV form so options are limited. Hard to decide.

For what it's worth (battery issues aside), I went from a 2017 Bolt to an ID.4 and love the new car. Sure there are a couple of things that the Bolt had that I miss (stronger regeneration and a 360 degree camera system), but the ID.4 is a much more refined, comfortable, and well made car. I don't regret my purchase at all.

After getting spoiled, 360 camera is a must for me. :)

Never say never...

Big question here is still if the battery caught fire or not. The fire was put out very easily, and the fire was mostly under the hood and not under the car itself.
Both give the impression that the issue might not be battery related. The dutch safetyboard is looking into it together with VW.

VW ID.3 flares off

This was on my news feed yesterday. Seems the owner was charging Level 2 & the spontaneity or speed of full involvement reads of a cell overload. Curious to know if this ID3 had seen the most recent OTA activation or was running a different version. Also not disclosed is the size of the pack. Much to investigate beyond "yeah, it's completely burned."

It's an understanding concern, but you can rationalize your way out of it. Compare it to a Samsung Galaxy 7 Note owner swearing off all smart phones.

The Bolt situation is an abberation, an entry in the field of Teslas, BMWs, Leafs, eGolfs, Hyundais, Kias, etc. that, by in large, don't spontaneously combust.

True, anything is possible, but I wouldn't bet against the ID.4 in this regard.

Thank you all for your responses. I am returning to annICE for awhile and will watch what happens over the next couple years as the battery technology evolves. I do expect to return to the EV world in time.

Realize: all cars burn. Dino-juice cars burn far more often. Statistically.

Good luck. You do you.

Early reports are that this ID.3 was smoking in bed:LOL:

I've seen EVs on fire from the battery. This didn't seem that hot and it seemed to go out fairly quickly. It is not clear how long this had been burning or took to put out by the video although we do see what looked like a tire bursting. Would be interesting to learn about the cause and other details.
