Hi All

Which L2 charger are you using at home? I'm still waiting for my electric vehicle - it could be the ID4 or the chevy bolt which every comes sooner...
I had installed an L2 charger from Electrify America but the unit was making a strong humming sound on stand-by. I tried contacting EA several times but they never got back to me so I ended up returning the unit.

Which L2 charger are you all using that I can use on an ID4 or even a chevy bolt ?

Thanks!

I have the VW 2-1 Charger, it's the Webasto Go relabeled VW. Many other car brands use the same one with their logo instead of Webasto. If you do get the Bolt, I believe it comes with a similar, if not the same charger.

Tesla mobile EVSE with Tesla to J1772 adapter....and later buy set of all types of plugs.... best mobile EVSE for the money and ability to use destination Tesla EVSE chargers across the US because of having adapter already for mobile Tesla EVSE.
I'm not Tesla fanatic....but i do respect when I see and test for quality and easy of use.

I have a United Chargers Grizzl-e classic. Built like a tank. Have had zero problems with charging either my ID.4 or the Prius Prime I had before it. I have the simple one, not the more expensive "smart" one. A friend has the same one for his Mustang Mach-e and has also had zero problems. I have mine in the garage, but it's designed to handle being outside in bad weather.

@iVolksWagenGuy - This thread now moved to the appropriate section where you’ll find much prior similar discussion. It’s understandable that as each new model year comes along new-to-EV prospective ID owners will have this question. We early MY2021 pre-orders did as well. Please do avail yourself of the wealth of existing insight and reviews. I believe you’ll find that most any follow on question you might have has already been well discussed too. ;)

I installed a Grizzl-e Classic 40amp set to 32amp on a 50amp breaker. Dumb charger so no data, no communications just plug in. Car handles any scheduling.

I also looked at Wall Box and Clipper Creek. I would have been happy with any of those but the Grizzl-e was available on Amazon next day so I got that one. Do be careful that whatever you get is UL or CSA certified, there is a lot of junk out there. And that it is installed correctly, to code and perhaps to better than code by someone who knows how to install EV chargers.

I see far too many posts where people are installing and JUST making code. Without taking into account the wire length, wire type, plug quality or the fact that an EV charger is a continuous load unlike a dryer, welder or most any other high amp load. Standard rule of thumb is to derate to 80% of breaker / conductor max load. But for EV's I believe that is going to change to perhaps 70% or even less as more data comes in. EV chargers are not like anything else we have experience with, so don't skimp on the wiring.

I installed a 40 amp Clippercreek dumb charger. It suited my needs. If no one has mentioned it check and see if your local electric company has an incentive for particular models of EVSEs.

I got the 240 V outlet installed with full permit, licensed electrician and went thru a township inspection which passed.
The wiring used is rated 50A so sounds like the Grizzl-e Classic should be suffice. Dumb is what I like and the car should have smarts in it so it should be able to manage the charging time and limits. I'm assuming the ID4 can do it's own management - correct me if I'm wrong.
I see the Grizzl-e 40 Amp with NEMA 14-50 socket on Amazon as well so I should be able to get it quickly and it is less than $400 as well. The 3 year warranty is a plus.

That is what I got. I have the Avalanche version :) because it was in stock and the regular one wasn't. Same price. My wife asked what color I got and I was able to say I got the white one to match the garage wall. She was super impressed I actually thought about the color. :):)

I have it set with the dip switches to 32amp and may go down to 24amp depending on how much heat is generated in the car / battery pack. For my use I suspect even 16amp would get me charged again by morning. I do like that Grizzl-e provided the ability to set the charge amps inside the box.

So far, that's not really the case - Hopefully things are better with the newer models with updated software

The price difference between a good smart charger and an ordinary dumb one has gotten smaller and smaller lately, so there's no real reason to plan to spend the next 5 or 10 years living with one which isn't WiFi connected, IMO

In near future EVSE will have no need for WiFi.... all firmware updates will be handled by EV communications wires and EV will gather all information from EVSE..... there is no need for another risk using dedicated WiFi for garage. Aftermarket suppliers will have to comply with EV manufacturers for ability to run firmware updates from EV charging port on vehicle. Some things will have to be standardized across the board... this type of competition ( my is better than others) will come to the end.
Tesla is already able to make firmware updates from charging port on vehicle for adapters or EVSE. Control of software logic will improve owners experience and there will much less issues where EVSE and EV manufacturers are pointing 👉 👈 at each other.
