It was time to replace our wretched Alenzas and, based on prior experience and online reviews, I went with the Michelin Defender 2. Costco wouldn't let me square the setup so I'm still stuck with the staggered 235/55/19 & 255/50/19.
Warning: After about 1,000 miles, I'm about to exchange the tires. I was expecting a range hit since these tires are not specifically designed for EVs. And while it's bigger than expected (15-20%), I could stomach that. What's intolerable, however, is the droning noise I get, starting at app. 25mph (taking over for the car's pedestrian-warning noise) and never going away. The car used to be pleasantly quiet to drive at freeway speeds but now it drones on making it noisier than a decent ICU vehicle. Alignment is fine as are wheel bearings so it really seems to be the tires. If anyone is contemplating the Michelin Defender 2, be warned that it is a noisy tire on the ID.4.
Question: Costco has graciously agreed to exchange the tires for another set of Michelins (with adjustment for different value/pricing). Which tire would you recommend? I've heard good things about the CrossClimate 2 but they're kind of overkill in our region since we do not get any snow or cold temps. Plus I worry about noise from the aggressive tread pattern. The Costco guy recommended the Michelin e.Primacy tires as better for range and noise (since EV-optimized). Then there are the Primacy A/S that come OEM on Hyundai and Mercedes. I'd rather get this right the second time around so any suggestions and feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!
