Great timing. Soon to retire co worker looking at a new CRV, mindset is 250 range miles isn't enough in case of zombie apocalypse. I'm taking the ID.4 to work today for show and tell. I forwarded him this comparison.

Ditto..doing the same for a colleague after i take delivery in the coming week. I have been doing EV Evangelism without an EV, would be much easier with an EV

Good article.

I find the comparisons in 0-60 times between EVs and ICE cars to be pretty laughable, especially low-powered N/A hybrid ICE cars, because of the actual difference in experience between the two. I'm glad they highlighted the ICE noise difference in this article.

You can floor an ID4 and be at 60 mph in 7.5 seconds in pure silence and with no NVH. You could do that from every stop light in an ID4 and not feel like you are hurting the car or your ears.

Meanwhile, do the same thing in a typical hybrid or buzzy 4 cylinder and you will be deafening your passengers, and having pedestrians look at you like you're crazy. A good example of this fallacy is the RAV4 Prime, which people rave about being able to do 0-60 in mid-5 second range - but it sounds absolutely awful doing so, with a small 4-cylinder revving at 6k RPM the whole time. The reality is you aren't going to use the car that way if you have ears or any level of mechanical sympathy, so it will be "slower" than something like the ID4 in the real world.

I had a chance to take the ID.4 onto an uphill on-ramp with a short merge and lots of jockeying with freeway traffic trying to exit 800 feet later. This car does great. It's no slug and doesn't struggle.

Funny. I was showing this EV skeptic the ID.4 when one of the engineers walked up, and he (skeptic) went into full sales mode. He's been studying! Started spouting off range figures, platform attributes, price and incentives data. Dang. I think he just sold himself the car.

You know how they say you don't really learn a subject until you begin teaching it?

Show your co-worker some of the pictures and details in this thread: Volkswagen to test ID.4 EV performance in NORRA Mexican...
The ID.4 was able to finish a 1000+ mile offroad race, with only minor modifications. That is pretty capable!
He would say that's great but he needs something that'll go at least 1,200 miles just in case the Canadians invade from the north.

You should mention to him that efficiency will go down at high speeds to get away from an invasion so he'll really need 1,500 miles range to be safe.

I have driven the Honda CRV hybrid and there is no comparison with the ID4. That little 4 cylinder engine gets really annoying after a while. It does not seem to make sense to compare an EV to a hybrid! At least drive train wise.

Interesting article comparing ID.4 to CR-V, esp the part about braking from 60 to 0.
(The 60-0 braking time is generally more important in preventing accidents than the 0-60 acceleration time).
But the article fails to mention the most significant difference: ICE SUVs, even with stability control (ESC), have a much greater chance of rollover than BEV SUVs. The Model Y has a 7.9% risk of rollover compared to the 2021 Honda CR-V which has a 16.4% risk of rollover!!! Which one would you want to be in in a rollover? The Mach e and ID.4 will be tested by NHTSA later this year, but I guess their risks of rollover will be in the order of 8 to 9%.
The heavy battery underneath BEV platforms (the ones designed to be BEV only and not used for ICE models) gives them a much lower center of gravity, a very good thing.

Intimidating stereo? Wow! That’s the bit I took away from this good article . As I’m still waiting for my Pro S to arrive I am interested to know from the all the fortunate owners on their impressions of the ID4’s sound system and stereo. Any audiophiles out there? 😎

I find the audio system in my 1st edition to be very good. It is no like my home surround sound system, but if one sets the equalizer correctly it produces quality sound.
