Mounting the front license plate

My state requires that all cars have a front license plate. Since I only recently got the car, I am waiting for the plates to be delivered to the dealership. VW provides a mounting frame with the car (currently sealed in plastic inside the car). My question is - has anyone tried mounting the front plate and frame using double-sided VHB tape? And if so, is this secure and sufficiently waterproof?
I know it can be drilled and mounted, but I would prefer (if possible) to avoid doing that.

Try using the search function on this forum. There are many threads covering front plate mounting without drilling.

Has worked well for me thus far.

Agreed. Sly brackets. I used them. They work great. Get the leveller.

If your state requires a front plate why worry about the holes? They'll always be covered by the plate.

For me, I might eventually want to sell the thing, and possibly even to someone from a neighboring state that does not require a front plate. I'd at least like to keep my options open...
