I received my plate. Did you need to order a mounting kit, did you say? Was that from the same vendor?

I ordered it from CustomEuropeanPlates.com
It came with a generic plate holder. I then went to my local dealer and got 4 of the little front plastic plate holder expanding brackets. These are the same ones that are in the existing front plate holders on all ID.4’s coming to the states.

To remove the original front plate holder you use a small screwdriver to push the center through. Unfortunately this leaves the plastic pins in you bumper but I was able to extract them gently pulling on the front fascia until the pins dropped down. It helped to have a few fingers in the grill to catch them. Their universal bracket lined right up and the pins hold great. Could not be happier with the quality of the plate from them and the fit.

Is the original front plate holder held on with x-mas tree plugs?

If they are a pair of panel clip pliers would help.

Perhaps, however the center pin sits flush and is small. If you choose to just remove the clip leaving the pin in, you cause minor damage to the bumper. If you remove the pin you get a clean hole when pulling the clip.
