Not even a day old...a small mod

Picked up our ID.4 today. And I had to get rid of the silver trim right away. A quick wrap, so much better. Need to schedule some tint.

Looks good, thinking the same thing!
Dumb question, isn’t the silver roof trim on the FE and Pro S Gradient itself a vinyl sticker? Or is it painted silver??
They are not. They’re silver painted plastic pieces. I wasn’t adventurous enough to try an pop them out to paint for something. Maybe when the factory service manuals comes out we can figure it out.

Well done wrap!

Personal preferences are always very, well, personal. Initially I ordered the Pro S non-Gradient (and therefore no silver trim). But when I actually saw it I had to have it and refined my order. Then when the FE 2nd chance came around I was in part motivated by its silver trim inclusion. So to each their own.

"Making it your own" modding is always a valued [more so USA] thing. ;)

Interesting, so I wonder if it’s also possible to swap the trim with a non-Gradient car. By the way, ID.4 service manual is available on erWin. Have been tempted to pay the 1-day fee and spend some time downloading.

I just saw the same thing and think I will spend a rainy Sunday afternoon doing just that

I was thinking of adding a light gray carbon fiber wrap over the silver.

Am trying to get the one day erWin subscription and they are making it as hard as possible. After registering and making 2 website jumps, on the checkout page it is asking for the erWin registration number. In the list of products at the top there is an entry for an "ODIS Registration Fee" Does anyone know if you have to buy that first for $100 before you can get the $35 day pass?

ODIS is for Online Diagnostic something or other. Mechanics will use it, you won't, skip the $100 fee.

That is what I thought and have been trying. After registering an account it pops up a window that says they are having trouble with their credit card provider and will be updating on September 21.....seems a long time away..... And when I follow the instructions to order it will not go anywhere without the "erwin registration number" Either I am doing something wrong, entirely possible, or they have a nice little loop setup. I emailed the technical service and will see if they get back to me tomorrow.

If anyone has figured it out let me know
Ok, as expected it was me being slow...they want the login ID from the erWin account page. For anyone trying, after you buy it they send you an email saying that they will be back in touch within a day with the details on getting the subscription. I will be the guinea pig and let you all know how it goes!

It certainly is not the most intuitive system to get registered for. It is also not the most intuitive to figure out how to download the files. It took me about 4.5 hrs to download everything I wanted for my '14 TDI JSW.

I am seeing that and good thing I will have 24 hours! A company called Bentley Systems released all of the Phaeton files on CD under license from VW and I have that for it. I try to get the factory service manuals for every car I have. To me well worth the price.

I miss the days when buying the Bentley CD's or books was the hardest part of finding factory service info. I feel like they stopped offering new models in 2013 or something. It's a shame.

I had a Bentley manual for my 2002 Golf, but they had gone to the erWin model by my 2012 Passat. It is a hassle to get now, but $35 for a manual is better than the $70 for the Bentley manual. It is the same 'manual' that the VW techs use so hopefully it will be the best.

Can I ask how much it cost?
I did the work myself (about 2 hours) and probably $40 worth of Avery vinyl I had left over.

Would you say it’s possible for a first-timer to do this, or is experience required?
Don't know how handy you are, so YMMV.

The door trim is a bit forgiving for a first timer. The top can easily be tucked in with a business card/vinyl squeegee. The bottom is hidden behind the doors (which I did a VERY rough cut), but no one will notice unless they're staring at it. Hardest part is getting some vinyl where the front fender is, since you need to tuck some under there to hid the silver behind the fender.

The C pillar piece was a bit harder as there's not much space for the vinyl to grab on to so it took a while to work it. But I still have some lift here and there since it got dirty. I had to work outside while the area was puking pollen everywhere, with a bit of wind. I might redo it eventually if it peels too bad.

So I say it's worth a try, or you might be easier to just pay a proper shop for it (I'm guessing it should be under $200)

My ultimate goal would be to paint them. But I didn't feel like breaking a piece that no one has on the first day of ownership. Just waiting for someone to figure out how to remove it.
