NYS Clean Pass Program

The NYS Clean Pass Program allows vehicles with a Clean Pass and a single occupant to use the HOV lane on the Long Island Expressway during peak hours when normally 2 occupants are required. Using this lane is a huge time saver if you travel the LIE during peak travel times. The criteria for obtaining a Clean Pass is that the vehicle must exceed 45 MPG. NYS generates a list of vehicles eligible for the Clean Pass. The list has not been updated since 2019 and thus the ID.4 is not on it. The only information provided is that they are working on an updated list. If this program is important to you, please call the NYS DMV and voice your displeasure. Maybe Andrew Cuomo will finish this list and publish it before he finally leaves office.

I wouldn’t count on him doing much of anything…..he’s done quite enough….

I believe you should be able to still obtain a pass for an EV that's not on the list yet. I think it's the hybrids that are a little harder. I spoke to another ID.4 driver at a charging station this morning that had a pass on his car, and he said it wasn't an issue to get.

I have the same thing with EZ pass. I wanted to get the green one for discounts on the thruway but the car is so new that it doesn't have it as a choice.

I guess I will call them. I'm not looking forward to being on hold for who knows how long!!

Just applied and was told my pass is in the mail. You don't need to call, luckily. Just go to:

There's instructions there on how to submit the request via email. Worked like a charm.

I wonder if Nassau and Suffolk police will honor an HOV permit from another state, like Maryland. This fall I plan on traveling back up to Long Island where I used to live.
