so you want it to close in on the car in front to less than 1.5m and respond slower? You trust technology a little too much

 

Well, no.. I want it to react as fast, and I want the distance to be 1.5m, not less. And as a matter of fact yes, I do trust technology a lot 😅

 

This could only be done safely if the cars could link up to use each others' sensor and control data. You should wait 5-10 years for such technology.

 

I am more comfortable with a distance between me and the vehicle ahead of me in the 50-75' range depending on speed. I trust technology, just not most of the drivers on the road. If that gap is too much for some then they can do just as they do and pull in front of me to not waste space I guess. I just slow down to my normal comfortable spacing and drive on.

 

The thing is, as I live and drive in Egypt, the current distance is VERY tempting for people to cut me off, which triggers the emergency break, which puts me in constant risk of crashing or being hit from behind.

I accidentally found myself driving in that setting here in New York (not as bad as Egypt, but probably closer to Egypt than the rest of America ) and I found it incredibly abrupt with its braking. It’s much smoother if you go to 2 or 3. Given that, I suspect it couldn’t physically handle anything closer than 1…

 

I tried that for a few days.
The car then starts to keep an even bigger distance between me and the cars ahead, which actually leads to more chaos 😅. The car then drives at an average speed of 60kph at a 90kph road, which I absolutely hate, and leads to a lot of cursing and beeping on top of the chaos 😅.

Was similar in Chicago. The conclusion is that you can’t use TA in these settings

 

So does that mean that I simply cannot adjust that distance further using the device?

 

Yeah, and in fact you probably want to save Travel Assist for long distance highway trips. It just may not be up to the chaos you’re describing!

 

As a matter of fact, for long distances, I was looking into removing the need for my hands on the wheel every few seconds 😅

 

As an aside, VW group (Audi, I think) markets a separate feature called Traffic Jam Assist, but again I suspect it’s designed for orderly German traffic jams where everyone waits their turn and stays in lane…

 

As you and others here know VW is ultra conservative. Like, they won’t let you close your windows with the key fob 🙄.
