I just bought an ID.4 Pro S, last week, exactly the color (moonstone gray) and trim that I wanted. The last time the touchscreen worked perfectly was at the dealership, when I entered in my address to set the navigation for home - once I rolled into my driveway it started failing to respond to touches, first with some deadzones and extremely delayed responses, and then finally no response at all to touches anywhere.

The gesture detection still sees my hand, all the capacitive buttons below the touchscreen work, and I can still use voice commands; it seems to be almost exactly what Mark is describing in his thread: Infotainment Screen ENTIRELY "dead to the...

I've taken the car to the dealership and they're going to diagnose, but I'm doing a long-distance move at the end of the month for a new job, and the plan was to do it in this car. This means that assuming the dealership decides the screen needs to be replaced (which seems likely), it's possible they won't be able to get to the parts for it prior to my move. If that's the case, logistics dictates I'd be better off driving as planned with a non-functioning infotainment screen (but still very drivable vehicle), and then get it fixed at my destination.

To plan for this, I've been trying to figure out what functions I can do without using the touchscreen. The climate control seems like it's pretty straight-forward:
  • "Set fan to [1 - 10]" to change fan speed
  • Sliders to adjust target temp/seat heat
  • Various phrases to change vent outputs
Charging I can still manage via Car-Net, since I was able to get that set up before the touchscreen stopped working entirely, and there I can at least set target charge and current max. I can also get into the vehicle information screen via voice command, but only to the pane that it defaults to with efficiency stats.

For navigation I can technically still use voice to set new destinations, but it's so bad at figuring out anything other than charging locations that I'll probably just use my phone. Cruise control and assist functions seem to work just fine on the steering wheel.

One thing I can't seem to do is change the driving mode - asking the car to "change to eco mode" just gets me a response that driving modes can't be controlled by voice (which seems ridiculous). Are there any other things I'm missing, that are going to be a problem on a long road trip with a number of charge stops?

A heap of empathy cast your way for your situation. I think it’s doable, if the dealer lets you have the car back to drive.

One thing you haven’t mentioned is whether you have DC Fast Charged the car in this condition? Especially, at Electrify America? I would want to know that DC fast charging worked before loading up for the trip.

IMHO, driving mode settings are closer to being nuances rather than big differences. Nice to have more than something really noticeable. Good luck!

I have DC fast charged the car briefly at an Electrify America station, mostly just to practice before this trip, but it was only for a few minutes. I think you're right though, I should make a plan to discharge it significantly and then charge back up at an EA station as part of a pre-trip test.

Good to know about the modes! If I can get roughly the same range by driving carefully as I would by using eco mode, then I probably won't worry about not being able to switch.

I would not do that. try to work different schedule or figure out different type of transportation
Good luck
Unfortunately, I bought this car with the plan that I'd use it to move to a new city, and if a brand-new car can't be reliable enough for that then I'm not keeping it. If I have to fly or drive my previous car and find a way to transport my ID.4 afterwards, then I'm better off returning the car on lemon law and buying something else when I arrive.

Your best case scenario is to ask for demo ID4 infotainment screen swap....

So, grab a screen off another ID.4 they've got on the lot? That makes sense, I will bring that up, thanks!
The two dealers I spoke with will not do this. As it is a Warranty Case, Corporate wants part for part.

As long as you have CarNet active & can access the ID charge % you will not be inhibited. Same said with activating pre-conditioning the cabin prior to departure, as long as CarNet can communicate with the ID (AND THAT THE SERVER IS ONLINE cough cough).

While I live in the Capitol of Vermont & Verizon is the data transfer network the ID's are using & I have line of sight with the Verizon Cell tower: there are days when the car cannot establish a strong connection to the tower. My e-Golf had the same issues when VWoA switched contracts from AT&T to Verizon for data to & from the Carnet features in 2019. I got my e-Golf in March of 2019 & the app communicated flawlessly. End of September & it was like we went to over the air dialup. So my 1 year trial was 6 months & CarNet never got my credit card information. Nor do they now with my ID4.

So case in point: if no cell service to the car (where ever it is parked, say a deep underground parking garage [like level 4 of the underground garage @ UVM Medical Center] OR the Northeast Kingdom) you are SOL in getting access at the car via Carnet. So think forward & get the car's charge profile to that 100% before you drive it out of range.

I have my ID set for 100% (not the default 80%). Plugging into my Level 2 at home & my Level 2 at my summer cottage is totally fine. Same said with plugging in at EA & also EVGo. I have had zero issues. When I connect to charge, the Infotainment screen will come up on the charge screen & list the charge percentage & ETA of completion. I just cannot do crap on the screen, like slide bar the charge limit. Only issue is that the screen will close after a few minutes & go back to the previous screen. Seems to always go to the map destinations search screen.

The ID Light across the dash offers a SoC if I just open & close the door. OR if I am in the house & have line of sight with the cars dash, I can just key fob the car locks & it turns on for a few seconds. It is how I am muddling though this. Yeah, muddle. On a brand new car. I have to muddle. Shame on VW.

If you press the Mode Screen on the dash, the button will bring up the Mode Page. While the page is open: if you slowly keep pressing the mode button, the modes will cycle from Eco to Comfort to Sport to Custom & then back to Eco. That is how I have adjusted the modes. Once you have selected the Mode, the screen will fade out after about 30-40 seconds to the previous screen. The processor is undersized on this screen & it is slow to react, but it does react to the button inputs.

My family & I have been attempting different command lines to see what this "Hello ID" will respond to. BTW, it does hear every swear you throw at it...

Realize that the default Online mode (via Carnet) will recognize English, French & Spanish. Offline mode is limited to basic English Commands.

Here is my short list "muddle list" for Hello ID:
~ Turn on Air Care (I use this extensively)
~ I'm hot/cold
~ Increase/Decrease/Raise/Lower Blower Speed
~ My Hands are Cold/Hot
~ What is my cars efficiency?
~ Tune Radio to FM **.(point)
~ Turn on Sirius Radio
~ Turn on Bluetooth radio (for my phone App: I use Radio.net (German) & TuneIn & also I have the FREE NDR Radio App. In case my wife wants to stream Radio FFN out of Hannover & hear Morgen-man Frankie or N-Joy Hamburg & hear Kuhlage und Hardeland or NDR2 or NDR1)
~ Show Map (espeically helpful IF the screen is dead ended on the Search Navigation of Past places & you cannot back out).
~ "Show Last Destinations" will bring up a list of all past navigation destinations & you can select by number the top places. Sadly, you cannot scroll. Hand wave gesture is side to side. NEEDS TO BE UP & DOWN TOO.

Biggest issue with the Infotainment Screen being STUCK is driving at night. Having a blinding bright screen that (due to a Dealer Factory Reset) has the Night/Day detection OFF. In that event, I use a What is my Efficiency command to get it to the travel efficiency. Hand wave gesture works to go from Since Start to Since Charge to Overall.

As I discover more ways to command the screen, I'll add them here. (I usually do this on my drives until I get too annoyed & say: "Hello ID, you suck & F off." Which is when I take a break from this drenn & just drive.

Have fun Muddling!

One time on a road trip from LI to my son's house in Pittsburgh we lost the charge screen, speedometer, odometer, and several other functions. We were able to continue our journey by using the Car Net app for SOC and I had a speedometer app on my phone. The next morning everything was back.

To add another piece to the screen issues puzzle, I have terrible 4G reception in my (current) driveway, and even when signal is available it's clear that the tower that's servicing it is completely congested. The way the responsiveness issues behaved made me think at first that it was being driven by difficulty pushing telemetry data up to Car-Net, and I drove down to a neighborhood with better reception a few times which seemed to temporarily resolve the issue. Since you've also dealt with it in similar poor reception/low bandwidth area, it sure seems like it could be the culprit...

Awesome, yeah it's ridiculous that we have to jump through these hoops but good to know that I can still at least charge and monitor without issues.

Perfect! This solves my problem, the Mode button does seem to work so I should be able to at least cycle modes.

This is super helpful, and I will print this list out to keep in the car (which is ridiculous to think about on a vehicle like this, but here we are). I will have to try hand waving on this screen, but at least at the home screen, I was unable to get the gesture controls to actually control anything; the screen still clearly saw my hand and spawned text descriptions for buttons when it got near, but left and right gestures didn't do anything. I don't believe I tried it at the travel efficiency screen though.

I am definitely going to grab a speedometer app for my phone before I leave!

From what I have learned about cell towers, are that on some providers tower/stations, the array will "self tune" to provide for the greatest consumer demand. Where others are specifically pointed to the providers desired/ forecasted direction on coverage. Example: if all the traffic & demand for cell service is on the side of a mountain where the interstate runs, the other side of the mountain gets crap for coverage (even if they can SEE the tower).

I tripped over a website one time last year that you can actually look at a specific cell tower (anywhere in the world), see who owns it (by provider), what networks it supports (ex. 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G) & most interestingly its coverage overlay (specifically the tear drop area of the towers coverage). It is a independent party, not one company owned. Pretty nerdy cell tower stuff. Anyhow. I looked at the towers all around my area & from the coverages, the predicted dead or weak spots are exactly what the map was telling me it would be.

As a very belated update to this, I ended up not having to worry about this at all! The dealership was able to get parts in to replace the screen well before I was planning to leave, did the swap, and had the car ready for me well before I needed to pick it up. The new head unit works perfectly, or at least as perfectly as it should - the interface and performance aren't always what I'd expect, but touches respond appropriately.

I'm most of the way through the trip at this point, and despite my initial problems this car has been really fantastic to drive on a long interstate route. I love how it handles, it just seems to do the right thing at any speed.

Related question on this old thread: After you do some initial setup, can you operate the car in normal day-to-day driving without ever touching the touch screen? One might hope that a combination of gestures and voice commands would allow control of everything that normally needs to be adjusted.

Yes I often don't use the touch screen. I change the temp with the dash slider, and I change the volume or music track with the steering wheel buttons.
