I value the knowledge and insight I have gained from my fellow members on this forum. One week into AWD ownership here in NJ and all good so far. Question: Dealer offered the usual 5-year tire and wheel protection plan (VW thru Allstate) for $1,599, which quickly dropped to $1,199. Only took this type of policy once in this lifetime on a Mercedes E250 after my wife had a number of low profile tire/wheel issues on her vehicle. Paid about $1600. Destroyed 1 tire (no wheels) in 5 years and "saved" $300, with a net loss of $1,300. On these massive ID4 20-inchers, would you accept or decline? Do you think the dealer (excellent 30 year relationship with us) has more room to maneuver? Looked at tire ($300) and wheel ($450) ballparks, and would need 1.5 "disasters" to break even. What say you?

I have always been a "Decliner" but... Over the last few years we have had 4 washing machines bite the big one. On the last one I bought the policy, and then... The new one had the main suspension system have a major issue. Gotta say I'm glad for this one policy.

I am pondering that the newer tires on EVs are both new (LRR, etc.) and expensive. I know "traditional" logic says no warranty, but I wonder if the more expensive tires on these cars might invert the balance.

I now throw myself open to your slings and arrows. :)

No extras for me. The factory warranty is enough. I got suckered into an extended warranty on my Bolt EV, (because I'm such a wuss around sales people). I wasted about $1500.

Not this time, and they didn't even flinch when I turned down their offers.

If you finance that $1200 with the car, it would actually be more when totaled up over the life of the loan. If you can afford to pay cash for the policy, skip it and bank the $1200 and the odds are very good (about 90%) that this will end up like it did last time with your Mercedes - You'll 'save' a few hundred while losing several hundred. I never buy them and I've never had a single incidence where I regretted not buying one

But . . . . if you or another driver in your household has a tendency to run over a curb now and then, you can maybe figure out if it's a good deal for you personally - How likely are you and yours to experience 1.5 disasters??

My wife is an excellent driver, but her first experience with "low profile/high performance" tires on a Saab years ago did not go well (several wheels and tires). We have rarely had a problem since then, so I think I'm leaning strongly in the direction of the majority on this thread -- no insurance, and (as you said) set some money aside if the inevitable happens. Thank you!

I wouldn't take it from the dealer either, but every tire I ever buy as a replacement I 100% buy all-hazard tire polices. It's usually damn cheap/included from places like Costco, and I've used it a number of times on just about every car I've ever owned. And even then if you had to pay for it, I've never seen it over $20 a tire. So why pay $1600 for something the regular market has at around $100?

As for rims, a lot depends on your deductible on your insurance. If you have a $500 deductible, and a rim costs $500, you are gaining nothing on your out of pocket, but if you paid $1600, you'd still have to bend more than 2 more rims worth to break even. If you bent 2 and turned them in on your insurance, you'd buy one and hopefully insurance would buy one and you still be a rim+ to the good over the dealer.

Honestly, in my opinion, if you can afford the $1600, be your own insurance if it concerns you. Put it in the bank, earn a little interest, and use it for yourself.

After two flats on one tire, I had to replace the OEM tire on my 2020 Bolt after only 2500 miles, and Discount Tire offered to cover all 4 tires for all hazards for $18.50 per tire. I jumped on that. If you have a local chain tire store like Discount Tire, ask them if they will cover your OEM tires.

We got our dealer down to $700.00 dollars for the premium tire, wheel and door ding protection plan. My wife has a dendency to hit curbs thus scuffing up the wheels. We had this protection on our Tiguan and used it 3 times for nails in the sidewall of the tires and twice for the wheels once for a door ding. It paid for itself many times over. We have already used it once on a scuff of the wheel on the ID.4. Warranties can be good or bad and is a personal choice. So far the tire warranty has worked very well for us. I would definitly try to work the price down.

That might not be a bad deal with all the combined if it's over a long enough period to benefit from it. At that price, you are starting to make more sense IMHO.

Yeah 1100 sounds pretty pricy. Most extended warranties I tend to avoid, but we are the most unlucky people with tires and wheels. All the flat tires we seem to get are in the side wall that can’t be repaired, so we have to buy new tires and I can’t seem to train my wife to stay away from curbs 😂. Glad she doesn’t read this forum. 😎. So the tire/wheel/ door ding and key fob warranty has worked well for us

If you send me $1,100 for the tire/wheel coverage, I won't tell your wife what you said. :)
