I have a slight incline on my driveway. In 2 weeks of ownership i've noticed 2 times where I left the car in the driveway, that when i get back in I can't shift into any gear, even neutral, and the steering wheel remains locked as well. I've tried "starting" the car with hitting the brake, and the with the pushbutton, both don't release the gear. The infotainment works, the gauge cluster works, no errors, nothing, just can't shift. The only way I'm eventually able to get it into gear to get out of the car, come back like 30mins and try again, and maybe it will work. I mention the incline because it only seems to happen in that scenario. Anyone have any ideas or similar issues? I'm taking it to the dealer next week, but i'm not sure what they are gonna be able to find.

Searching multiple forums there seems to be an issue with the gear dial itself, but everytime someone has an issues they see a bunch of errors read out. I'm not receiving any errors.

Thanks!

What's strange from a mechanical point of view is that the ID.4 is "always in gear" in that (a) it's a direct drive single speed with no clutch or torque converter, but more importantly (b) there's no parking pawl that engages and could potentially get jammed / not want to disengage due to it being under load from the car pushing back against it on account of the incline.

So what you're experiencing has got to be electronic, in other words "not able to enter into a drive-readiness state," which makes it all the more baffling it only occurs on inclines.

Do I have an answer or suggestion? No, sorry. But I'm very curious. Please keep us updated as to what service says. Try to capture the problem on video because they'll be unable to recreate it at the dealership.

That is weird and i have no solution but one suggestion.could u try to park in reverse?
Maybe it helps but no matter what it could the dealer to diagnose it better.
The 30 min sounds strange, are u sure u need to wait this long?
Can u go to neutral and roll down? I think u said nothing can be selected in that case ignore

I'm taking it to the dealer next week, i have pics of the display screens, but Nai3t brought up a good point about getting it on video. I can't get it into N or D/B, and the steering wheel locks. It almost is like it's not fully "waking up". I've tried different remotes. 30 mins is just an arbitrary number, it never works after leaving it for 5 minutes, i've only got it to "fix it's self" after about 30+ mins of letting it sit and going back and trying again.

Thanks everyone for the input and suggestions. I'll keep this thread updated.

Next steps before the appointment are:
- Try reversing into the driveway (great suggestion)
- Getting it on video
- Driving it more and more (it's our secondary car) to see if i can duplicate this outside of my incline driveway.

I am leaning towards an intermittent key fob or intermittent comms with the key fob like VW Technician stated. There's been a couple of times in my 2019 VW Arteon where I got into the car and when I attempted to start it I got a warning saying no key detected, even though the key was in my pocket and the key fob battery was new-ish (I've replaced them once last year). I cycled the ignition back off, got out of the car, locked the doors, unlocked and then was able to start with no issue. My son's 2017 Jetta has done this before too.

Disclaimer: I don't own an ID.4 yet, planning on leasing a Pro S AWD next year, but I've owned several VWs over the years.
