Picked up my ID4 today

Long-time lurker here. I picked up my ID4 today from Santa Cruz VW in California. The car came in late last night. The dealership treated me very well and gave me the expected money factor and fees without any attempt to mark up. They received 3 cars including the demo and they said they have 30 inbound (great to hear this).

When I first drove the car I was a little underwhelmed by the acceleration but later discovered it was in eco mode. As the dealers are learning this car anyone who goes for a test drive should check this. The car is noticeably nippier in sport.

I love the wireless phone charging with wireless CarPlay - the integration seems smooth and was very easy to set up. So far I have zero problem with the infotainment even if it sometimes has lag when swiping between screens. I did notice that gesturing left and right lags less which makes me wonder if it is sometimes an input issue rather than a lag issue.

I tried travel assist on some not-so-straightforward roads and was left with the impression that I should not trust it 😊.

The electric tailgate button opens but pressing it again does not close it like other VWs I’ve used. Is this the same for everyone in the US? I saw a video of a euro ID4 where it closes.

So far so good!

Congrats! May I ask if you lease or buy?
I decided to lease even though it was a little more than buying.
That seems weird about the tailgate, why shouldn't it be able to close from the button up front when it's just a button on the tailgate to close it anyway? Would be really silly to have to get out of the car just to press that button back there rather than just hit the interior button again, when you're doing a grocery pickup or something, for example.
Congrats on the new car! The power hatch switch in the driver’s door only lets you pull, not push, but you can close the tailgate by pulling and holding the switch while it closes (and beeps).

Did your dealer update the infotainment to 2.1 before you took delivery? You’re the first person in the U.S. that’s reported lag, that I’m aware of, and I thought VW was updating all cars to 2.1 before delivery.

The info screen on the ID.4 demo car I test drove was terribly laggy and unresponsive, unacceptably so. I never found the screen that showed the software version.

From the window with all of the icons, scroll down and select the "Settings" icon. Then scroll down again, and click "System Information". Mine shows 0792.

Could you please explain why your lease is more than buying.

Herein lies the problem, I was only able to scroll the 'home' screen down once during my 30 minute test drive. I couldn't get it to do it again no matter what I tried. But thanks for letting me know where to find it.

Yes it is 0792 build - the lag is not bad it is just not buttery smooth like a smart phone. I only see it when moving left and right through the nav screen. Once in a section everything is fast. Honestly it is minor and I am not bothered by it.

the best money factor equates to 3.43% APR while the best purchase interest rate is 1.85%. I considered a one pay lease to avoid the lease interest too; they said they could do it for something like $21.4K from memory.

Sorry Misread.
This is my current experience as well. I can't help but compare to iPhone/iPad. But then those devices are almost constantly updated and I have no doubt the ID.4's firmware will be as well, albeit likely a slower timeline.

The dealer is not truthful with the MF if they say $21.4K for a single pay lease.

Because the implied interest rate on a lease is higher than the interest you pay when financing because you are paying extra for the optionality to return the car. At least that is the way I have understood it.
$7500 Federal Tax Credit or $7500 lease cash makes a difference depending on your situation. Buying will be cheaper for others but not for everyone.

Does the car retain the sport setting, or do you have to reset it each time you start? Thanks!
