Likely everyone else figured this out before I did . . . . but I didn't see it mentioned anywhere, so . . . .

We're old fashioned in that we've been playing our favorite music from USB memory in all our vehicles for . . . . years :ROFLMAO: We've accumulated about 750 of our favorite songs on a 4GB stick and we have one in each car and I changed the head unit in our motor home just because it didn't play USB media. The ID.4 does, but it's not as simple as in our other vehicles because there is no typical USB slot to stick the memory into. I bought an adapter cord from Amazon and my memory plugs into it and it plugs into one of the USB C slots in the console - Problem solved! The Infotainment has the random option so it selects the songs at random if you choose, so no matter how many hundreds of times you've heard all the songs on your memory stick, you never know which one is coming up next. I like that!

The adapters are from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BS8SRWH/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'd imagine you could plug in anything which would run off the power supplied by a USB-C port, which should include small hard drives, solid state ones for sure

I really don't know how files and folders would work - We've never organized our drives in any way, we just kept adding songs we really like to the root directory and then let the vehicle randomly play them. We don't put anyone's full album of music on there, just the 2 or 3 songs from an album we really like and they don't play together, back to back. If a song shows up that you don't care to hear right now, the steering wheel controls allow you to skip over it to the next one. We have one car that won't random play them and over the years we've got to where we know what song will be next . . . . we've heard them all that many times over the past 10 or 12 years - It takes awhile to collect 750 songs individually onto a drive :ROFLMAO:

Experiment with what you can do with files and folders and add that info here for the rest of the 'normal people' to play with. Who knows, one day we might even join you ;)

I wonder if you can plug in a hard drive or SSD? I have terabytes of music… of course I just listen to Spotify lol
I had a 256 GB micro SD card for my music in my 2018 Tiguan with about 10,000 tracks in FLAC format (which takes up more room than MP3 files.) I found an adaptor on Amazon that lets you plug the SD card into a USB C socket. It works great in the ID4.

I have used a classic iPod in my other cars and was disappointed that it was not supported, even using an adapter as above. I then experimented with connecting a USB thumb drive using the same adapter. You can navigate to a folder and it will play somewhat randomly. Don't recall the sort order, but if it is organized as a playlist, it will not be in the same order.
I still use iTunes music on my PC. If I use a cable to sync my phone to the PC, I can upload playlists and other music to the phone. It then shows up in the infotainment system and allows you to select playlists, etc. iTunes is no longer on the iPhone. iTunes music plays through the Apple Music app on the iPhone.

This is what I use to plug the stick into and then use a passenger C port so it's out of my way. USB-C 3.1 Male to USB A Female Adapter Converter OTG Type C Android Phone USB-C 3.1 Male to USB A Female Adapter Converter OTG Type C Android Phone | eBay
That one would be sticking your memory straight out hanging in the air, easy to bump when sitting a phone on the charging pad and maybe eventually damaging the USB-C socket in the car. I like the ones with a short cable attached so you can tuck the memory card down to the bottom

Can you transfer the songs from the flash drive to the car? I mean, does the ID4 have internal storage room?
