POLL: The infamous creaking/noisy brakes just before stopping

ID4 brakes

Sold my ID4 last year and bought a Mach-e, now considering switching back but the sound from the front brakes seems to still be there. Link above to a Google folder contains a video of my previous car and the sound (I intentionally provoked it to be a bit louder than normal, slight uphill etc).

I’ve tested a total of 5 ID4s and they all have it.

quite a few people report they don’t have it.. would you mind posting what is your car year/equipment/wheels etc? I’ve yet to see one that doesn’t have it. Any speculation as to why some people have it and others don’t? No know fixes I think?

In the configurator during H2 a note started popping out when adding loads of equipment saying that “double brake callipers will be added to your car”. Not sure if this fixes the problem. I.e. if fully equipped 22 models could be “fixed” from the issue?

I’ve tested RWD, AWD GTX, fully equipped, standard equipped, 19-21”, 2021-2023model years and all have it (have not tested a well equipped 22-23 though). I don’t understand how some don’t have it…

I would switch back if I could find a fix for it.

thanks in advance for any help and answering the poll. If you don’t have the noise would you mind stating:

Yes, I have the issue and it's one of my top complaints, although I still like the car. Upon first delivery of my car it had very little brake squeak, but after ~50 miles it sounded just like the car I test drove.

2022 RWD Pro S (made in Germany), 19", yes I've tried bedding in the brakes but it didn't go away.

Sometimes the noise is quieter but I haven't noticed a consistent pattern. I've also noticed the same noise on Audi Q4 Etron (based on the same MEB platform) as well as some ICE Audis, so it may be a VW/Audi/Porsche thing.

I have the issue. Didn't notice it or know to listen for it when I test drove, so I can't say for sure whether it was there from the start. It's nice to know that it's likely not indicative of a problem, but it's definitely one of those things that's irritating once you home in on it.

I have had it from the start and 2.5 months/2300 miles later it’s unchanged. It’s literally the only noise the car makes mechanically so I think the irritation is exacerbated. I was back in my 2011 Civic last week and I noticed it makes a similar noise, although I never really noticed it before over the constant ICE din.

'21 AWD Pro S w/ Gradient. I've been getting a high pitch whine when braking from the very start. Same sound as if the pad is worn, but it being new that can't be the case. Also groans like your video when braking at low speed.

Ah yes, I also get a high pitch squeal when braking before the loud groan sets in. Seems to happen around 1-2mph.

My brakes groan at the end of a braking to stop and sometimes when releasing on start especially on a hill. Been doing this since day 1 to today 1.5 years / 30000 miles later. I think it is because of the material between the rotor and the brake pad, but it does not bother me too much to spend time replacing pads.

I recall I had the squeal in the beginning but the squeal is gone for me now the last 20000 miles or so, only low speed braking groans

2023 Chattanooga built. I alway drive on B and TACC on and it comes and go abruptly. It takes away the elegance and makes it feel like a 30 year old car especially with passengers.

I don't get the big deal. Maybe the noise isn't that noticeable on the two ID'4's I've owned. The transition from regen to friction will happen right before stopping. If's kindof reasonable that there is some sound associated with that, no?

Did you listen to the OP's video? Granted that video is taken from outside the car, but even inside with windows closed my brake sounds very similar.

Imo that kind of creaky noise every time you stop/start is not really acceptable for a brand new car and cheapens the feel as others have said. It's especially noticeable with the lack of engine noise. My much older/cheaper ICE cars in the past (not VW/Audi/etc) have no brake noise.

I think you found the culprit. If they did one pedal driving on the next update this probably solve it.

I'm not sure I've EVER seen a set of disk brakes that don't creak (etc.) under at least some very-slow-speed (creeping) applications.

I agree that the ID.4 seems to do this more than most cars but I don't know any cars where you can't provoke at least a little bit of this.

On the other hand, the sainted drum brakes at the rear of my ID.4 almost ALWAYS make a nasty noise when I first start reversing if there's been the least bit of moisture in the air. Yeah, the brake shoes may never wear out but I'll bet something in there corrodes away before the car gets very old.

A bunch of hybrids I've had and the Ford MME we currently have don't have any noticeable change (sound or otherwise) when coming to a complete stop. But the '21 Pro S AWD groans almost every time it comes to a complete stop. There's also a fore-aft rubber-banding type motion on the ID4 that no other vehicles have had.

Three ID.4s, all did (do) this. It doesn't bother me in the least.

I mostly get it when it’s wet out, in the same sort of conditions as my previous ICE car. It’s a bit more annoying than my previous car because of how little the mechanical brakes get used, meaning it takes a much longer drive for the squeak to quiet down.

I understand that the noise can be annoying, but does it mean that the brakes aren't working properly? I’ve heard something similar, to varying degrees, with almost every car I’ve ever owned. (Maybe this is why “noisy brakes” seems to be a topic common to every automotive forum I’ve ever read.)

Could the noise be from the suspension? The car rebounds at the same time and it seems louder when i stop at slight incline.

I have an AWD Pro S 2022 and have noticed the noise since the first week. Seems to have gone down a little bit now - 4000 miles on the vehicle
