I have the ID.4 reservation under my name.
It will be my wife's car so normally we would register it under her name, financing under her name.
Does it matter to the dealer?

Mainly need to plan ahead for the financing.

It didn't matter to my dealer at all, although I should say that we paid cash, not finance or lease. But my wife was the primary signatory on everything, and I am second.
I think it matters that there is a reservation and deposit and that the reserve holder is present at the time of sale.

Didn't matter to my dealer. However, I had to be present to sign a special document acknowledging the $500 deposit I made on the reservation site was going toward the purchase.

Doesn't matter. May be up to the dealership on how they manage the $500 deposit though. For accounting reasons some dealerships may want to "cancel" the reservation and refund you your $500 instead of applying it since the car is being purchased under a different name than the deposit came in under.

FWIW I had to sign a paper applying the $500 deposit even though my wife is the main signer on the car.

Yes, this is how I did it as well. My wife's car is in my name and vice versa, because nothing makes sense.
