Review: Electrifying, software requires improvement

Got my Black first ed yesterday and here is the quick review:

  • Looks good and very spacious for its class
  • Drives very well and is comfortable
  • Electrifying with its beautiful ambient lighting including welcome light projected from its side mirror (why was this not discussed by anyone so far!) - I posted a image in the gallery.

Not so happy about:
  • plastic panel near front glass is misaligned and is a major eyesore. I don’t know how the car passed inspection and I missed it too when I took delivery. Update: this issue was fixed by dealer - thanks!
  • I have the latest software but the lag in many screens is sometimes unbearable . I don’t even know when and how the gestures work - it seems to be like they work when they feel like it - LoL
  • screens looks great but I think the interface is a bit hard to use and not very intuitive - e.g try finding carnet qr code. Why is carnet not on the main screen? I still don’t know where it is buried
  • Carnet app itself is a bit clunky - if you are scrolling and you will invariably touch the temperature function and change it. It then immediately greys out and tries to sync with the car which can take up to 30 seconds and the screen is frozen
  • idle sound is a bit too loud (I know it is artificial )
  • finally the range projection is very misleading and changes quite a bit. Battery charge indication is a better metric

Overall impression - Good car, love it - but software is a classic Version 1 release - has lot of issues but could better in future.

* One more thing ... apple car play works great but very difficult to add more than one phone (I am software guy and I could not do it from car screen after adding the first phone). I had to go from iPhone settings to initiate car play sync (for second and third phones) and it immediately complained about enabling Siri which i was forced to do :)
Why did you take delivery??? Being in a rush to spend $45000...

There is a reason we call the range projection the "Guess-o-Meter". Even ICE cars have problems - I had an old car where the range would gradually increase as I drove simply because that car had poor economy in city driving.

I have yet to see gestures work at all - either they are turned off or VW decided this was a bad idea. The screen does respond when I get my hand near the screen (text labels appear). But if I swish my hand in front of the screen, nothing happens.

The amount of lag seems to depend on how much stuff is on the navigation pane. For me there isn't much lag at all, but if you are in an area with lots of points of interest, it could be far worse.

Genuine question about the lag, do folks regularly switch between various screens, or is this just an "I'm getting used to the car, and messing with settings" thing? In all of my vehicles the infotainment remains on the nav screen permanently. I only change what's displayed on the screen if something unusual happens and I need to make a change to something. Maybe I'm just a creature of habit. Wouldn't be the first time I found out I'm weird. I also set the climate control to 70F and leave it there winter/summer, just alternate the A/C being on or off.

If that makes you weird, than so am I. Although my temp sits at 68.

Maybe we're both weird, then. I quite like automatic climate control and enjoy its set-it-and-forget-it nature. Cools/heats the cabin to the temp I like, adjusts the fan as necessary, accounts for the sun, adjusts for humidity (not all cars do that)...what's not to love?

I'm with you, 70-72 for me. My wife however is all about riding the fan, the temp and how it where it runs. I try to suggest to her that the vehicle will do the right thing, but she responds with " I know, but I want more air at a specific temperature and place" and I can't really argue with her on that. To each their own

As long as you realize that using climate consumes electrical power. If you can stay comfortable using just seat warmers and the heated steering wheel, your range will be better.

I'm coming from an early i3 BEV with 81 miles of range on a perfect EV day. I didn't sacrifice comfort for range in that vehicle, and I certainly won't with the ID.4.
