It's been a few years since I last read an article on this, but the upshot is: don't do it. Aftermarket rust protection products at best won't work any better than the stuff VW applied during manufacturing - and at worst will cause more damage either because they're poorly designed snake oil or they'll trap the water/salt/other close to the metal and actually promote corrosion.

I look at it this way: to effectively apply any type of rustproofing, you'll have to disassemble the car to get to all the spots water/salt/other might reach. If you're not willing to disassemble the car to apply whatever it is, why bother?

I can't even imagine undercoating the bottom of that beautiful battery pack. I'm equating 'rust-proofing' with undercoating. I wouldn't do the stuff they inject into doors and other crevices, either.

I've it done it both ways where I've had them drill and coat in every jamb and crevice and I've had them just spray without drilling. Obviously drilling and getting into every nook is better, but I don't want to void my rust warranty and I know VW does a good job of coating/galvanization.

My focus is the underbody/subframe/suspension components that get a beating from salt and moisture etc. I find that it all gets rusted and more difficult to service in future due to seized bolts and control arms.

I do agree that all the road dirt and crap get stuck to it. I guess I'm wondering if electrically there are any causes for concern or if the fact that it's an electric vehicle, perhaps they have a sacrificial cathode somewhere haha

I thought the days of "Rusty Jones" were long past. But I guess dealers will try any upcharge they can. 😖

As cited, the factory already did a stellar job of rustproofing via a body electrostatic dip and seam-seal application. Watch any 'tube automotive assembly line video.

The funniest one to me is billed as a "teflon coating" for seats. Not sure I would want to slide around on the seat like I was in a teflon pan. :ROFLMAO:

Have it washed more often and if you really want to be Fanatic lift ID 4 2 times a week and wash it under.... This is how my brother wash his BMW outside then he takes it on car lift and wash it under... couple times a week in the winter. ...
But my brother is BMW Fanatic and this is the way he see his toys washed the way it should be....and when he polish his rims they are not only from outside what eyes see but also anything his hands can reach. ... I guess some Germans are gone mad when they wash or clean.
Couple times a year washing EV under would be good practice and worthy for people who are keeping it till wheels fall off...and by doing it this way over time you will see for yourself where to make some improvements regarding rust proofing.

That's for sure the best way to maintain it, but 1. I don't have access to a lift
2. I don't have time to wash it that often and in that great detail in the winter

The best option in that case would be to get a wash pass for the winter

When I get mine, I will probably apply some spray on rustproofing every year or two for any bare metal components in the suspension like Fluid Film. The last thing you want to do is apply a rubberized undercoating. In YouTube, search for "South Main Auto Rustproofing". He describes Fluid Film, Krown, and Rubberized coatings. I don't think that there was a definite opinion on Krown and Fluid Film, but he had a definite opinion on on rubberized coatings. I would skip drilling holes unless I bought another Chevy truck to help the rocker panels to last a little longer. Huey52 mentioned an electrostatic dip. I had seen that for the Passat that I owned but had not seen it for the ID.4. I was hoping it had that. Since that must be the case, I would see little advantage for anything but bare steel.

Yes that was exactly what I was looking to do, getting Krown to apply their film mainly in the exposed steel under body components. I know that VW/Audi do a great job, but my 05 A4 is rotting away, whereas my rustproofed MK2 GTI is sitting pretty.

I'll for sure be washing it regularly in the winter to keep the salt and grime at bay, but a coating every other year won't do it any harm I don't think
