It certainly seems to be pulled/hard stop vs a gracious end - given the "cancel any future appointments" messaging. Indeed, it states last repairs 1/25 and the notice was posted 1/26. Hopefully nobody was started early today before the notice took effect as that would seem to leave the warranty claim in limbo (although I suspect a call to VW corp for this corner case would work as long as the software server isn't shut off)......

I was lucky as my 2022 was delivered with 3.1.0. One of my reasons for selling was the lack of faith for ongoing updates. VW will have finite software resources and any resources that get pulled into fixing the old stuff (or the update process for the old stuff) can't work on new stuff. That's a huge problem.

It's pretty clear VW has a problem. While big auto can generally handle recalls - those are usually well scripted mechanical replacements or a (simple) plug in and flash. The ID.4 doesn't seem to be simple given the multi-day process and reported failures. It will be interesting to see this play out.

I'm in the camp of no problems with our 2021 AWD either. My wife loves the car, and I'm fine with it as well. The used Bolt we just bought is possibly slightly better in the software, but as a 2019 it too is slow to boot. The only thing it has so far I wish the ID had was a notification of the charge door being open (well, and a better stereo on the Bolt I have).

Anyhow, 10k service tomorrow on ours. I'll ask the dealer if they have anything they can share.

So my guess - the update needs to take less "tech time" for them to proceed. Swap the 12v in the bay in 15 mins, put the VIN into a website, pick a USB out of 20 variants, and plug it into the car in the parking lot for 12 hours, customer picks it up the next day if the screen shows green.
Can't be done.

As per Chris of Batterylife regarding 2.4 - the mandatory step on the way to 3.0 in Europe - the update has several parts, which need to be installed one by one, verifying every step and should something go wrong, the whole process needs to be re-started. So a tech needs to baby-sit the whole update. And there is a non-zero risk of bricking a module when doing the update.

Hopefully from 3.0 onwards (European deliveries have had 3.2 since November, at least) it's just OTA. But from 2.1/2.3, there is no way to do the update that doesn't tie a tech for a full day.

It could be that they are done with the 1st wave of invites. The only cars that haven't been done are from folks that didn't respond to the recall. So maybe they are fresh out of cars to update.

I’m not sure I understand.
Do you own or are you considering purchasing a used 2021 ID.4.
If not I’m not sure how software issues with those cars affects your ordering a 2023 ID.4, which are great.
Their point is that: 1) Given that VW can't manage updating the software in a certain set of related vehicles and 2) Given that even ID.4s running 3.1 have blatant software bugs, one can reasonably conclude that it will be a long time before VW manages to get around to providing updated software to ID.4 owners running 3.1 software.

IF the report that started this thread is true, then I think that's an entirely reasonable conclusion.

I also think it's time we start talking about a Class Action suit against VW for destroying the market value of our cars due to their ongoing software incompetence.

(But I'm sure a bunch of you will just state, once again, that I didn't perform the proper due diligence before buying my VW Bug.)

This is insane. After VW has notified all of the '21 owners that they will be getting this update, they are telling dealers there is no such service campaign available. Unless it is being immediately replaced by a new service campaign, VW owes everyone who received a letter an explanation.
Please note that they never notified “all of the the '21 owners” that they will be getting this update. VW have never notified me of anything at all, even that they acknowledge that I bought a car from them.

Maybe they don't have your email address? I know there was a mass email that went out with the subject of "An update for your 2021 ID.4 is coming soon". I received it on 12/6/22. Then goes on to talk about the software update that will need to happen in the dealership.

I'm registered with them (VW corporate). I use the MyVW app (and that has my E-mail address). I provided my E-mail address to my dealer. There's no reason why a competent organization wouldn't be contacting me routinely, let alone having sent a “Hello! Welcome to Volkswagen!” e-mail.

VW cited in the email that they would subsequently send out a USPS mail with a dealership-scannable code. I never received same for my early MY2021 FE.

They know you’re trouble! :ROFLMAO: I did get the email telling me an update was coming… but It never came. Now, I suppose I have to hope they fix the update process and start again…

Edit: As an aside, I’m still waiting for the free 3G sunset fix for my Golf that they promised would be forthcoming in letter or email inviting me to schedule my car in to the dealer to have the 3G radio replaced with a 4G radio. That was promised by end of 2022.

Looks like either they are taking a new direction or encountered a serious issue with updating the cars. Either way the lack of communication has been the biggest pain point here. I have 3.1.0 from factory but I know that CARIAD mentioned about some big update coming soon. Could be that they are skipping version 3 altogether or consolidating with We connect.

That article says nothing about our cars, and @mcden unfortunately there's no way for 2.1 cars to bridge any software gap without updating the problematic modules to something other than what they currently have loaded. So whether it's 3.1 or 3.2 or 4.0, coming from 2.1 those updates need to be applied, "hands on" and that's apparently where the minefield is.

Geez, this thread. I had to double-check that I had not accidentally wandered on to facebook. VW decided to halt the upgrade for unknown reasons. They have done a shitty job of keeping their customers informed of what is going on. Everything else is baseless speculation and hand-wringing.

I spent decades developing large, complex software systems. My guess is that their upgrade process is not idiot-proof and they were seeing too high of a problem rate related to that process (the process of upgrading, not the 3.x software itself as it has been shipping for quite a while). They likely assumed a higher level of competence among their dealer techs than they actually have so they are pausing for a period of time (2-3 months would be my guess) while they bullet-proof the upgrade. I would expect a new rollout in a few months with whatever version is latest-and-greatest at that time.

Yeah, I know. I started by complaining about baseless speculation and here I am baselessly speculating.

I wonder what VW could possibly have done to prevent all the baseless speculation and hand-wringing?
