Just picked up our Moonstone Gray ID.4 November 3. Live about an hour north of NYC. Moved to the ID4 from a 2019 Huyndai Kona that got re-purchased by Hyundai due to battery recall and car being out of commission for 5 months. So far we are enjoying the car. Only complaint so far is the Infotainment system is incredibly buggy.

Anyway for the approx 24 months that we owned the Kona, we participated in the SmarCharge Rewards program through our local utility (ConEd in our case). The program rewards you monetarily for charging off hours at home—we charge with reduced rates from midnight to 8 am. We earned a few hundred dollars participating. You just have to agree to install/insert adn ODB reader into the car's OBD port--just under the dash to the left of the steering wheel and brake.

If interested you can sign up through this link: SmartCharge New York | SmartCharge Rewards

I am posting this as it worked well for us and was a way to get some money back for charging your car. They do monitor your charging. (Disclaimer: I do not work for a utility nor do I get paid directly for posting this. I do, however, get some referral points if you sign up using the link I provided.

Hi! I recently got an ID4 in NY (Westchester) and signed up for the Smartcharge program. A couple of days after I plugged the Smartcharge OBD reader, my car lost connection to the 4G network and Car-Net. I brought it to the dealership and they said that the OBD reader was the cause. Here is what they sent me: "From what I understand, because of the aftermarket accessory you have plugged into your vehicle, it is causing the system to override and shut down to prevent theft/hacking of your car/system. To my knowledge, and based on what I have been told, my service department has followed the proper procedures to diagnose the issue - and I do believe the reason for the intermittent service disconnection is due to the smart charge device". I tried to raise it with both Smartcharge and VW, to no avail. As a result, I can't take advantage of the Smartcharge program. Curious if anyone else has experienced this.

Mine has been working fine since we installed the OBD and still have my 4G connection. Also in Westchester. I know when they, SmartCharge, sent the reader there was 2 ways to hook it up. One was to just insert the reader and other was to use a harness extension to connect it. I’ve been in the program for a couple of years now and the SmartCharge people have been somewhat helpful. Did you try calling them?

Depending what this dongle is looking for it will trigger in some instances theft/ hacking protocol.....this company has to get approval from VW to be on list of recognized products that are following VW can bus protocol. ..ask them to provide this information . Keeping this type of dongle connected non stop will never let ID4 go to deep sleep if not designed properly. Can you post service ticket regarding this issue.

Interesting, thanks. I'll try again reaching out to Smartcharge. I never got a service ticket. I just pasted the explanation I got from an email the dealership sent me. The technician also mentioned that the device had caused the odometer to stop working.

Thanks! And you never lost connection to Car-net?
I never lost the 4G network connection--the green light by the overhead light switches has always remained on. Car-net shows me charge level and communicates when heat goes on in the car in the morning (we set it through the infotainment system). However, we have never been able to get Car-Net on our iPhones to be able to control the car.

Just curious--where in Westchester are you? We're in Peekskill

We are close to Millwood, not far! Does this mean that you can't start the climate control from your phone to warm up your car in advance on a cold day? For me that's the main (only?) benefit of car-net (I also have an iPhone). Wondering if your issue is not triggered by the Smartcharge device?

It's possible the smartcharge could be interferring, but even before we got the smartcharge obd, car-net never worked and car-net told us to wait for an update that they said was coming in January and now I've read was pushed to march. We set up the car to turn climate on each morning before my wife leaves for work (she uses the car more). So we have it set to go on at 8:15 M-F and that works fine. Car-net sends me a message that it goes on, and the car is warm when we get in it. So we can live with that for now, since car-net doesn't do much else and we like getting the money back from SmartCharge for our home chgarging. We'll see what happens once Car-net officially releases their supposed update.
