It is approved obd2 tool by VW for doing many things on your ID4...... it is almost like factory ODIS tool on smart phone....and it has ability to work behind vehicle firewall if you want some changes......
Just to query module versions, VCDS also works, but it would be an expensive tool to purchase just to satisfy your own curiosity. It is possible that some independent repair shops in your area may have this tool, and if you are on good terms with them, they might scan it for you.

Thanks for the description but I would probably get myself in real deep doo doo using a powerful tool like that.
I have never used OBDEleven, but VCDS has a notion of things you can do that are "safe" - mainly meaning that they are just querying state, reading error codes, etc, etc. For the purpose of figuring out module versions, a "scan" is really all that is needed, which essentially means just querying state of all of the modules.

Good to know, I'll keep that in mind

Interesting that the updates will take a bit to be processed. Is this typical for updates in the Tesla world? I would think the update message should mention this. In an application deployment for any widely distributed application, the help desk wouldn’t be happy with this release 😀
There are limits how much they can post on pop-up screen when download is finished and asking user to confirm for update to start. Customer service is getting trained as we speak...and they have instructions if they need to escalate to people who know all it needs to help.

It is good tool but it lacks being authorized by VW and working behind firewall.....but for troubleshooting purposes and scanning all modules it is good enough for service shops.
No aftermarket tool unless is authorized by VW will have ability to work behind firewall and get access to this part of vehicles modules. Anything behind firewall needs good internet connection and VW server connection to make any changes or configurations.

It is an interesting journey. I hope this experience will be of benefit to others in the future.
Don't worry because being one of first people who are getting updates.
What was time needed to download and what was time needed to finish update?
Depending on cellular network and vehicle location it could be faster or slower for download times.

VW TECHNICIAN,

Do you have any idea if this OTA was an aberration or may all ID.4s at 3.1.X expect an update soon?

Fellas looking for matrix lights will be happy because it will have all necessary things to make matrix light module and windshield camera module to work in sync to have High beams on non stop and not blind vehicle in front or incoming vehicle from opposite line.
Haven't heard anything about matrix lights on the ID.4 in quite a while! Are you saying that with the 3.1.4 upgrade we'll be able to enable matrix lights???

Yes.... missing update for windshield camera is in this update. It can be done with factory version that ID4 have come with but it will be very limited in ability to work correctly.

Tesla has learned over years that big GB updates are not good for time and risk of updating too many things at same time. VW is on learning curve and confidence from software development engineers what will evolve over time to be multiple small updates in 24 hours. And because of so much delay we are forced to get it corrected. I'm also getting tired of emailing my fellow software engineers and pointing fingers at them, because all my time spent trying to fix it finished being bug in software that I have no magic tool to fix.
