Hey all,

Just picked up an ID.4 last night so super excited. Did the first charge at EA station after we left the dealership and got everything to work there.

When I got home I tried to plug into my Level 2 (16A) charger and it appeared to work for a minute but then stopped.
Vehicle said something about checking the station and my inverter app said “car stopped the charge”.

Anyone knows or run across this before?

Thanks

This is the EVSE that is integrated with the SolarEdge inverter? Does the SolarEdge app tell you anything?

You can get the granny cable out of the back and try that to see if that works or not.

Thanks. I did end up using the 110 cable overnight and that worked.

Yeah the EVSE is integrated with the SolarEdge 3800H. Had it setup a couple years ago when we had solar installed. So first time using the Level2 feature yesterday.
The SolarEdge app just said something like “charging disconnected by car”

I’ll call the install company on Monday but seeing if anyone has any ideas I can try this weekend.

Thanks again.

Have you tried your SolarEdge more than once? Maybe try a little firmer, wiggly push when you plug in the J1772 connector into the car. Then, take notice if the connector locks to the car, paying attention to the little pin at the top of the port on the car that comes out to 'greet' the J1772 plug during the handshake communication between EVSE and vehicle. This protocol will always (try to) err on the side of safety if the connection is not good.

unfortunately in my circle no other EV drivers to test out with at this time. I sent an email to the solar installer if they have an EV or extra charging cable to test

I did notice more in troubleshooting that when plugging into the port I had to push harder to ‘lock’ in the J cable connection. So I thought that was it but still no joy. The charging port still blinks white and eventually solid red.

The SolarEdge inverter does displays EV charging connected/disconnect when I plug/unplug from the ID4.

So unsure which end has the issue. At this point I’m hoping it’s just the charging cable itself. That would be the cheapest option if it comes to it.

I am wondering if the car is requesting more than the EVSE can deliver, and it doesn't handle this very well.

In that light, here is something else to try. The car has a setting on the charging screen for "reduced charging rates" - I don't remember the exact wording. But my recollection is that the car only asks for 1-2kW of power if that's turned on. You might give this a shot as well just as a sort of sanity check.

yeah there was some “reduce AC” toggle I tried on the screen but same result still. I’ll keep digging around.

True the SolarEdge setup I have is a 16A for the EVSE so on the low end of Level 2. I thought too there was maybe something to with the ID4.

I plan to hit a Level 2 at a shopping center tomorrow just to make sure other options are still available.

Thanks all.

So this morning I charged at different public chargers in town and they worked fine. Also did a full charge at EA station.

As suspected something with the home EVSE so hopefully my installer or most likely the SolarEdge manufacturer has some info.

Though if someone has a similar combo SolarEdge unit with the built in Level 2 charger and it works with their ID4 please let me know.

I am hoping it’s the charging cable itself and not some issue with the Inverter and ID4 talking to each other. I won’t have a delivery of a new charging cable for a few weeks to test out.

I appreciated everyone’s suggestions from yesterday. Thanks.

All I can say is good luck. Our SolarEdge inverter was made before they tried to make one with an integrated EVSE (~2014 vintage), so I don't have a whole lot more to offer. Hopefully all you need is a firmware upgrade.

Thanks. If it turns out to be a software update on the SolarEdge unit even better. Let you folks know how things play out in the next month or two. Until then I’m not totally hurt about charging at EA stations when needed :)

I hate to post something on such a faint memory of a post I saw or a video I watched in the last several months...I know that I saw something about being finicky and not playing well with power coming directly off an inverter, including trying to use an inverter generator to power an EVSE. Maybe someone else has a better memory.

If so that would be a bummer. Hopefully my installer can help when I get a hold of them tomorrow.

In the meantime another 10 more mins at EA station so I don’t have to trickle charge over night.

thanks.

Just an update:
I had my Installers out here this past week and when they phoned the SolarEdge support folks they updated software/firmware to my Inverter to current version. They also unresgistered / re-registered my charging cable to the Inverter. Everything checked out on their end from what they could tell.

Though still no joy charging from that system to the ID.4.

This morning I was able to borrow a 2022 Bolt EUV and attempt changing. That failed too from my SolarEdge combo unit.

So back to the SolarEdge cable or nature of combo setup of Inverter being the issue (most likely).

I think ultimately I’m looking at a separate 14-50 circuit run…which helps that I still have room on my Electrical Panel for. Not helpful would be the cost to do that now.

Other that that item (still is a big issue as far as I am concerned) the vehicle has been great. I love giving folks a ride and providing any knowledge and experiences to help them consider EVs at some point.

You should still escalate with SolarEdge.

If you turn on the "reduced charging rate" option, does it work? I can't help but wonder if the car is asking for more juice than the EVSe can provide, and it isn't handling this condition properly.

I sent a message to my Solar installers for support with SolarEdge. Hopefully they have something we can try next week or two.

I have tried the Reduce Charging option a few times on the ID.4 and same results of no joy.

When I tried plugging in the Bolt EUV it immediately failed with “Unable to charge” message. When I took the Bolt to the public chargers it worked just fine.

Trying another EV to charge with was my last troubleshooting step to isolate back to that Inverter/Charger combo setup.

crossing fingers there is still something on the SolarEdge side to update or try.
