Of course, asking about those who have cars that didn’t come with it.

As repeated ad nauseam:

- OTA 3.0 requires 2.4, which can only be installed at the dealership.

- 2.4 is being currently installed in Europe, with some hiccups. It's going to continue for September and possibly October.

- only certain users in Germany have had the option to sign up for 3.0 OTA, and that started only a week ago.

There is no word, rumour, hint or anything else regarding 2.4 let alone 3.0 OTA for NA.

Didn't someone say that the 2023 ID4s will ship with 3.0 (or even 3.1)?

I can't wait for VW to start shipping 2023 units to the various car reviewers.

Are you trolling?

MY2022 ID.4's since this summer have been delivered with 3.1 in the US.

As we like to say 'round here, the instant NA MY2021 start getting v3.0x updates you'll know as there will be a flood of new threads, far surpassing the number of current inquisitive ones (this one included).

MY2022 (German factory) were held at NA ports for quite some time awaiting v3.1 update (similar to the way MY2021 was held for v2.1). Fortunately that log jam is clearing.

MY2023 are being produced in Chattanooga and will also come with v3.0x software installed.

Only we early adopter, beta testers, who helped VW get this whole ID.4 thing going, are forced to [again] wait. 😒

People have hypothesized that 2023 cars will ship with a "3.2" release, that is described as a bugfix release over 3.1. But that version is not yet fully approved. They are very tight-lipped about what is actually different in that release, however - no reviews, no nothing, but the 2023 cars will be released to customers in Sept/Oct timeframe.

As for 2021 cars, nothing much has been said for US market. They have made aspirational statements every now and then that they would like to offer something to us, but no details. I have seen speculation that they are now in a holding pattern for this same 3.2 release, but that's just speculation.

The 2.4 rollout in Europe is proceeding - people some number of problems along the way that the dealers have to work past. The 3.x OTA is just barely getting started there - they can enable individual VIN numbers for the OTA, and they are giving it to very small numbers of cars in Germany - presumably to give them a chance to watch for problems and so forth.

This isn’t totally true. Diess said unequivocally that the USA cars would have an update in summer. Of course it looks like that isn’t happening. But to say they have just made aspirational statements is false.

If a single comment on reddit - in which the reply doesn't even specify US - is the only thing one has going, one should be ready to be disappointed.
I don't need to be ready, as I already am disappointed. 😔

Thankfully the ID.4 performs well for me as-is. ;)

VW, as a company, disappointed me independent of this. But anything a CEO says in public has gone through the PR approval first, especially in a situation such as this. It's not like he was typing the responses personally. And it was in response to a question about the USA, so yes he intended it to be a USA answer.

All true, yet there was ever zero announcements on the official channels - or even the closed Facebook group run by them - about any updates coming to the US.

Like I said, as that was literally the only thing you had going, you were setting to be disappointed.

If the updates actually were coming to the US, there would have been all kinds of announcements on multiple channels in June or July, the latest.

There was none. It wasn't happening. And as 2.4 times are now booked for November in Europe - where it is supposedly running - I wouldn't bet on a wider release of 3.0 even here before late in the year, let alone in NA.

Not the only one.

"Go down to the Volkswagen Brand Presentation - UBS Paris Electric Car Day" on April 12, 2022. Download the PDF, page 22. The woman who is presenting lists her title as "Head of Sales and Marketing - ID. Family", and she has used this slide for a while now at investor presentations.

So an update for the US market has been in the roadmap for a while, but they haven't given us a specific version they intend to roll out, and they obviously can't give us anything before it is ready.

Look, I've no reason to apologize for VW nor I have any stake in what happens in the US market, but that slide doesn't include the word "summer". There's still four months of 2022 left.

Diess said "summer" in the reddit AMA, but as said, I wouldn't put that much trust into anything said on such an non-official platform and I will still note that while the question specified US, the reply did not. It's not completely impossible that Diess missed the "US" there.

The plan was to roll-out the OTA in Europe during the summer, but the update to 2.4 got delayed (Chris talked about it, there were issues with the software found late and which took unreasonably long to fix), it's rolling out slow (you can book it today, next available date is first week of November), there are issues with installing it for several people (not isolated incidents) to the extent that shops are actually cancelling them...

...and the 3.0 isn't updating smoothly even for the small select group in Germany (again, Chris's failed).

Even if the original plan was to release the OTA in the US during the summer - where would they get sufficient resources and 12V batteries to do 2.4, I do not know - it was clear that it's not happening for a while now.

Also US being so twitchy about litigation, I am not surprised that they're holding it until it works reasonably well (which it currently does not).

Do remember that Diess got fired because of issues with the software-side of the business; models of Audi and Porsche being delayed years because of.

Did anyone really think that 2.4 updates would start to roll out in August with absolutely zero word from VW in June and July.

I did not intend to start a debate, just to ask if anyone had received/heard anything from dealers or otherwise/ and to not get complacent - especially since there is no real point person we can easily ask directly. I’m not sure the best way to articulate this, but some version of: it’s important to remember we should all be holding expectations of VW/facing them, instead of facing one another. Forgive the awkward metaphor but hopefully the gist was clear.

^the fact is that there are literally dozens of threads on the topic here, and absolutely zero news - zero - from Volkswagen about 2.4 for NA (it's mandatory before 3.0), how could there be a 3.0 OTA, when even the step before is anyone's guess? And people are understandably pissed about it.

What I'm trying to say that if 3.0 was rolling out, the forum would have a new thread on it every ten minutes. That would also happen if there was even news about 2.4 for NA.

The 3.0 OTA has, as stated, rolled out to a few select ID.3:s and ID.4:s in Germany only for now. The 2.4 update is ongoing in all of Europe, and seems to take at close to the end of the year to complete if not longer.

I'm willing to bet a reasonable amount of money that 3.0 OTA will not happen in the US this year and they might go directly to 3.1 or even a newer version.

(Just one source, but the claim this side of the Atlantic is that our MY23 would come with 3.1, not the current 3.0, which may or may not be the same as US 3.1).

What I’ve heard last week is they are focusing their efforts on the 2023 launch, apparently Canada has like 10k 2023 customer orders, the US should be considerably more, and they want to make this go as smoothly as possible. That does NOT mean the update isn't being worked on, quite the contrary, just that their communication team is very very busy on other things.

Some people believe that the 2023 cars will have version 3.2, but nobody is saying what is in that version. Plug-and-charge is one thing that people want to know about, for example. Or some kind of preconditioning? That's another one that people are looking for.

Beyond this, we don't know much - it would be logical that they focus their efforts on the 2023 launch, but some of the fixes that need to be pushed out will improve winter charging performance, and you would think that they want to get this out before it gets really cold. But it would also be logical that they want to see how the rollout in Europe goes before they make any promises.
