Ok, so I'm checking out my new id.4 fe yesterday and noticed on the inside of the hatch that there is a long cylindrical spot that is obviously meant to clip something into in the center of the hatch. There is nothing clipped in there though. Anyone have something clipped in there or want to make a guess as to what should be clipped in there?

It's designed to hold one of these warning triangles:

I bought one for my 2017 Golf from either Deutsche Autoparts or ECS Tuning and plan to move it over to my ID.4 when it arrives. VW has several model numbers that are all in the same size and shape case, so any will fit. Unfortunately, all of them seem to be out of stock everywhere at the moment. There are some non-OEM ones on eBay that look like they'll fit if you want to go that route. Just search for "volkswagen warning triangle."

Thanks for asking! I just discovered this slot as well 🙂

I noticed same thing last week and reached out to my dealer before understanding the purpose for the slot. I've never needed an emergency triangle before but the voice inside my head kept telling me to fill it. If I could have figured out something else I could put there I might have done that instead. It's easy enough to 3d print a case.

From my searches it looks to me like VW has stopped selling the triangle in the US. I have since purchased a 3rd party emergency triangle kit that appears to match the dimensions of the hatch door trim slot. It's cheap enough (3 for $16 even though I only need 1) and eligible for a return if it doesn't fit.

I should know this week if it fits after my order arrives. I'll post an update then.

The warning triangle is required to be in cars in most of Europe, and I seem to recall a first aid kit also being required.

Just curious if you received this and if it worked? I'd like to buy it too if it fits. Thanks!
Sorry for the delayed update. Unfortunately, no, the 3d party triangle I bought on ebay per that link did not fit. The length and thickness of the triangle pack were fine, but the width was too large. I have subsequently 3d printed a box that fits the trunk slot and can confirm that workable dimensions should be 430 mm x 46 mm x 28 mm. The image below shows the red emergency triangle I bought that doesn't fit, along with the black 3d printed box that does.

I have no idea what I will use the box for....maybe storing first aid bandages and such, or maybe I won't even end up using it, but my curiosity has been tamed.

Too bad they didn't fit, but thanks for saving us from buying something that doesn't work! Hopefully someone will find something that does. In the meantime, got an STL for the box? Maybe a flare or two would fit.

That's a great thought. Thanks! Some people use red chem light sticks as pseudo flares so that would be a good storage place for those as well.

Sure. The box is pretty crude, but give me a day and I'll post it.

I've finally posted it per link below. It's certainly not much, but hopefully other useful ID.4 models will be created by the community in the future.
Thanks, nice work! Hopefully this will be the beginning of a collection of custom ID.4 parts. I designed and printed some hooks to help manage my charging cable. I wonder who will be the first to try a 3D-printed frunk insert? haha. Thanks again!
