Much as I'm looking forward to delivery of our id.4 RWD as ordered, I wonder if others have any experience of taking a different/upgraded car off the dealer's lot.

I ordered a Pro for delivery in late summer but a FE became available and I bought it in March.

I had a reservation for an AWD Pro S but also snatched an FE that someone decided not to buy.

No 1 ID.4 1st Edition Sold in Jacksonville, FL

Somebody ordered a 1st edition and decided not to buy it. So, I stepped in. Many thanks to Todd Clouse @T-Clous my sales rep and the staff at Tom Bush VW of Jacksonville. They got me a great deal. Now is home!!!

I had originally placed a reservation for the AWD, factory direct. When that reservation got postponed until February 2022, I decided to cancel that and I purchased my Moonstone Gray Pro S RWD from a dealership in mid July. I'm completely happy with my decision.

While I don't have personal experience with swapping, there is a buyer at my local dealer who decided not to wait on the AWD any longer and bought a PRO S RWD off the lot and cancelled his order for the AWD.

I did it twice. Ordered a Pro/S in March (a specific dealer) and picked up a FE at a competing dealer (cancelled Pro/S).
Ordered another Pro/S (selected my FE dealer) and found the exact Pro/S for the same price (no markup) at a third dealership (cancelled Pro/S again).

Extremely happy with BOTH.

I too pre ordered the AWD and then changed to a 1st when it was possible. It was potentially an upgrade because of all the option packs. I have not regretted the decision. (Having already wired the garage for Level 2 charging and was raring to go). I did however, lease the 1st for 3 years to hedge my bets and give me an option for what was available in the future. Right now, I would be happy to buy it out at the end.
