Does anyone have recommendations for an adapter to be able to use Tesla destination chargers that is reliable?

I want to have as many charger options as possible when road tripping to the beach.

Thanks

Good thread on different options.

I purchased a TeslaTap 50 AMP - HIGH POWER. Stores with the VW provided L1 charger.

Thanks Keowee. That’s a good start. That thread devolves into other discussion pretty quick. Guess I’m hoping for some more validation. Not that I bought this but I’ve used this 5 or 6 times and it’s worked flawlessly type stuff.

also, any reason to pay the extra $100 for the tesla tap mini other than size and 50 vs 60 amps? Or is that worth an extra $100?

You need to make sure you get the 50 Amp unit. The ID.4 can use 48 amps and the Tesla Destination provides 48 or more, so a 40 Amp will burn out, or damage your car.

Have you received it yet? I ordered the same one as I traded in a Tesla Model 3 for my ID.4 so I already had a Tesla Gen 3 charger installed at home and didn’t want to change it.

I received the TeslaTap 50 AMP - HIGH POWER. This is not a mini unit, but the unit with a pig tail cable. It has worked well at two different Tesla Destination chargers.

I didn’t order a mini either, mine is out for delivery today. I just picked up my ID.4 a few days ago so I’ve been limited to public charging until now. Good to hear its working. :)

Did you order direct or from Amazon? How long did it take to arrive?

and thanks again for the help
I ordered direct, and I’d recommend you do the same. There are a lot of replica’s on Amazon that people have reported problems with. I ordered it Tuesday and it’s out for delivery now so pretty quick!

Excellent.

Headed to the beach on two weeks and want to make sure I have it. This will be our first road trip in an EV and there are several destination chargers around where we’ll be.

hi all! do u own a portable charger like a Mustart or Morec? which one(s) do u own and pls share your thoughts. TIA! :)
I stayed at a hotel last night, it had 2 Tesla destination chargers and nothing else. The hotel next to it had 3 Tesla chargers and only 1 J1772 charger. So yeah definitely recommended because you could get somewhere that has a J1772 but it could be taken already. I’m heading back home later today so I’ll report back once I get to test the adapter out.

I have the Mustart Travelmaster and it is working great. Have the 50A, 30A, and 15A adapters and have charged with all of them and had no issues at all. I really like the flexibility that the system provides in a simple unit. The digital display with volts, amps, and power delivered is nice too.

Does the 50 Amp work for 50 Amp continuous or 50 Amp rated circuit? for 48 Amp continuous, it would need to be on a 60 Amp circuit so was confused if the Tesla Tap needs to be 60 Amps as well?

i'm no electrical guy but i believe the idea is if u are using something "passively" like an adaptor in this case, you'll want it to be able to handle more amps than the source(charger) and the end point (ID4) are capable of sending/receiving? let me know guys if i'm off. :)

From the TeslaTap web site from the 50Amp cable:

“We do not list all of the vehicles that are compatible as our bypass circuit makes the TeslaTap 50 compatible with ALL US built EV’s with a charge rate up to 50 AMPS @ 250VAC (12.5 KW).”

They are good all the way to the rated number, no additional de-rating is needed. So the 50A is fine for the ID.4 48A maximum.

I am using the Lectron 40A J1772 converter @ 48A with no issues. Contacted Lectron and they said it "should be fine."

I've noticed no issues with heat even after a few hours of continuous charging. 8A isn't going to make much of a difference.

Also - it's black and looks the best. :)

"Should" is always the word I seek for assurance!
