I just came back from test driving the 2023 VW ID4 Pro S RWD model (201 hp). My concern was that the car would feel sluggish due to a lack of horsepower when compared to the AWD's 295 hp. I was pleased with the acceleration and performance of the RWD model for my needs. So for me going ahead with a purchase of a VW ID4 Pro S RWD is the way to go.
I have had my Id.4 for a few months, It has a softer ride and is quiet, and it has apple car play, and has a better looking dash. MY has a lot of fans, and it excels in some ways, but, none that are for me

you will enjoy 😉

My VW dealer called me up Saturday to let me know that a car identical to the one I ordered had become available due to a cancellation. As such, I spent the day working with them ironing out all the details of a purchase. I noticed that the dealer had around sixteen 2021 ID4's on the lot with mileages on them from 7K to 25K miles. The sales guy who was handling me seemed to be busy with customers working on new 2023 ID4 purchases, but there was only one person shopping and looking at the used ID4's all the time I was there.

When the sales guy worked out the numbers for a cash sale I determined that the total was a bit more than what I had calculated. That's when I discovered the "Dealer-Installed Equipment" line (detailed below) which turned out to be $2,408. I am not quite sure how useful and or needed any of these items are, but I was not asked whether I wanted any of them. The dealer just "requires" these to be part of the sale, because they likely make quite a bit of money on each. I was really on the fence about buying an EV because I really like my current ICE car (a trouble free car that I've had for six years), and so this convinced me to skip getting the ID4 for now.

Another one lost to dealership tactics. Those ‘requirements’ cost them very little.

The dealership I went to claim to have no markup but the sales guy said he accidentally added this 1 year premium junk warranty from another customer just right before I was going to sign. 🙄 Then I was tossed over to final stage boss who was taller and more menacing and tried to sell me a package with 3 to choose from and I declined them all. Hope you are listening Royal Piechs family and your highness Blume.

Yeah, and this was just the sales guy gauntlet. Having done a few of these, I know that the next gauntlet I have to go through is the "finance guy gauntlet" who tries to push on you all sorts of additional "insurance, warranties and services" for a "small" additional cost 🤣

You'd think dealers would be happy with the profit margins they get on these cars from the manufacturer, but it seems like they enjoy fleecing the customer.

Dealerships are usually owned by investment groups or a well known local heiress type wealthy family who live in a mansion. The salesman behave like debt collectors.

Tesla is the “best user experience” someone said? Driving the car is where the “best user experience” counts imo and not the ability to better manipulate a computer display. YMMV
With my BMW iX M60 i have not yet once tried to use line assist or steering assist. It is way better feeling driving it by yourself it makes you feel alive and connected to the road. Doing double work and watching when steering assist will scream at you is not something i find relaxing. But the way how Tesla is configured it is not giving you choice to use vehicle to enjoy it. Not having foot brake blending, ability to disable emergency braking or disable regen is consistently fighting Tesla configuration vs enjoying your own ability to drive the way you want.
This will be hard pass for many car enthusiasts that had experience with ICE vehicles. Some people actually enjoy driving it without any nannies running. At least I'm one of this guys.

I was that type until I got FSD Beta. Getting older and less attention span, I prefer getting to the location for my intended activity rather than the journey to get to the intended activity. Only time I like to drive is next to an M3, Corvette, Porsche Turbo, Hemi, Mustang, AMG at a stop light. I just stomp on the pedal while they fumble looking for race mode in the menu or switch, feather clutch, feather gas pedal not to spin, look at tachometer, gauge if it’s worth redlining, thinking of air sea level, and hope not to mis shift then wondering how the magazine got those numbers.

I can’t wait until everyone else starts buying up all of these newly cheap used Tesla’s and then start putting their abundant power to “good use”…💥 🚑

Sorry TSS I decided that joke might be ageism so I changed it. But I can see the allure of having a vehicle be a better driver than the driver but I hope that is never me!

Problem is we all influence the people around us and I noticed decades ago that the “competent” drivers you see in the 1950’s street drag race movies (and maybe experienced on the street back in the day) are long gone. Now a person will suddenly pull into your lane to either make you crash on purpose (possibly ineptitude) or just keep going when you stop for the next red light. Just last night in Escondido there was a Charger with the engine hanging out and another car smashed to bits at an intersection. 💀

I had a similar experience with Streetsboro VW of Ohio. Agreed to a sales price, then $2400 of "additional products" on the sales invoice. I asked WTH was the $2400 and they said "we install a car armor on all new vehicles, that is optional". After a couple days of back/forth and marketing spin from them, it was made clear that these pre-installed options weren't options at all. Needless to say the sale didn't happen as they found another sucker to take the offer.

I just wish more people would push back and end this NADA grift. I can do ceramic coating myself TYVM and I prefer to avoid questionable 3M interior protection products. Obviously this tactic must work or they would stop doing it but I just can't see people being ok w this in the modern era. Just do a search and you can find dealers that aren't as egrigious w the outright greed.

Yep, another dealer a bit further out shows total pricing without any of these "dealer installed options". Unfortunately, they only have AWD ID4s which wind up costing me the additional $2.5K my local dealer charges for their "dealer installed options". But at least it's getting me a second electric motor instead which is a much better use of that money than my local "dealer installed options".

My situation is that I work from home (i.e. no commute) and thus drive vey few miles per year so the math says that the expense of buying an EV cannot be will not be recovered with the associated ICE car gas/maintenance cost savings. Nonetheless, it pisses me off that the oil companies charge these exorbitant gas prices at the pump here in California. So I would love to tell them to F***OFF by getting an EV and not forking over any more money to them !

That’s in the movies. Back then cars were a lot slower, there were no freeway walls but fences. These days people are heavily distracted by cell phones and business. “Blank” people crossing the street on their phone and making tik tok video stunts is reality.

It’s always the Chargers! 🤦

Watched some of Munro Live on Youtube and he clains Tesla margin is 30%+ and based on their other videos they know what they are talking about. Then on top comes all those subscriptions which are pure profit. Their view is Tesla probably makes 40% margin on a car and it is no problem for them to drop the price to where it is now and still be profitable. Plus they crank out cars in 48s compared to 60s of everyone else.
