No. I think Tesla is screwed. Yes, they dropped the prices in the US, in large part, to qualify for the government subsidies but they are dropping prices globally. Their inventory is backing up and they're idling "cash incinerating" factories. Meanwhile their margins are evaporating. Their only hope, therefore, is volume and grabbing more market share. What are they selling though? Both Model 3/Y are aging designs with spartan lackluster interiors. The same build issues persist. The same service issues exist. The same insurance issues exist (try making a claim using Tesla Insurance and getting them to actually pay). FSD is circling the drain and NHTSA is one step away from dropping the hammer on them. Cybertruck will never be anything other than a niche product and Semi they can't even release all the critical data (e.g. tractor weight, etc.) Maybe a "Model 2" is waiting in the wings but unless they have a new design with mass market appeal and competitiveness they're done.

And then I'd have to deal with the phantom braking at highway speeds, the second-rate design of the blind-spot monitoring system, the usability nightmare of the "one screen to rule them all" approach, inferior headlights, no massaging seats, the lack of Apple CarPlay integration, the inability to turn off/adjust regen and one-pedal driving (i.e. no blended braking), and the comfort, drivability, and build quality of a bathtub.

Plus I'd be financially supporting the Internet's biggest troll.

No. I considered a model Y back when they used to be about this price but decided it wasn't worth it. That hasn't really changed. But there is more competition now. Only real benefit to a Tesla now is the supercharger network. I really feel that if the CCS network improved significantly then Tesla doesn't have anything left.

The good news is this is truly a deflationary move for the car industry.... MUCH NEEDED! This will make it harder for dealers to mark up there cars when anyone with the click of a button can buy a Model 3 for $35K (after fed credits).

People forget Tesla Model 3s had a 6 month-1 year wait only a year ago. Now I can get one from local inventory in a day. This is gonna speed up the crash of the USED car market... specifically USED Teslas. And put an end to marking up EVs above MSRP really quickly. Just walk into a VW dealer with your Tesla order on your phone ready to purchase a Model Y for $53K... and watch the VW Pro S Plus markup discussion end instantly.

So, thank Musk for that!

Lack of CarPlay is a biggie. I also never loved the Model Y's bloated Model 3 styling.

The unfair part was referring to no tax credit.. I agree the markups were BS... 100%. I honestly don't think Kia or Hyundai can sell there cars much lower than MSRP without a loss. Tesla actually has profit room. The current IONIC 5 and EV6 I don't think can compete on price without taking a loss.

I'm a little surprised that everyone here is so down on Tesla. I think the year ahead will be hard for automakers, but as far as EV sales go I think Tesla is in a better spot than the competition. I could be wrong but I think if there's price parity people will generally go for the Tesla.

it's a moot point anyway. You can have carplay in a Tesla aftermarket for under $100 bucks. Just a simple dongle you plug into the usb... no complicated install costs.

I bought a different version for my Honda Clarity to give it wireless carplay.

I always find it funny when people quibble over the lack of a standard feature in a $40-50K that you can buy an aftermarket solution for with $100.

Maybe you're right, maybe you're wrong. It'll certainly be interesting to watch how it all plays out. But my impression is that there's a lot of general animosity out there around Musk, which might be turning at least some people off to the brand. Speaking only for myself— ~5 years ago, I did consider a Tesla 3, but was turned off by a lot of their design decisions, by the primitive interior, by fit-and-finish issues of the one I test drove, and by what I perceived as deceptive pricing on their web site. But now because of Musk, I won't even consider the brand. Who knows? Maybe I'm an outlier? Or maybe I'm not their target market? All I know is that I have zero interest in owning or driving one at this point.

When the Y was first announced, I considered it, but wanted something closer to a wagon instead of a pregnant sedan. Wound up with a 2019 Subaru Outback instead and decided to wait until an EV closer to my wants came out. ID.4 seems about as good as it's going to get for a little while until the lineups get filled out.

While the Model Y is something you should cross-shop with the ID.4 and others in this space, it wasn't appealing, even before it was obvious Musk was a liability rather than an asset to Tesla. So not sure how stripping away the hilarious markup changes my opinion of the car.

I test drove a Model S in 2016. It was the first EV I ever drove and it cemented my decision to drive electric. But the Model S was too pricey and too large for me. I think the Model 3 and Y are both kind of hideous looking.

So, long story short, my first EV was a Bolt EV ordered from the factory. When the battery issue came up, I was encouraged to sell it back to GM, which I did in May of 2021. In July of 2021, I picked up my ID.4.

I totally agree. The reservation system for ioniq 5 was a joke.
