I think one aspect of this news is not mentioned yet. One way to restore the ID4's competitiveness is to increase its value thru improve its software and add features.

If they haven’t done it by now, they can’t and won’t improve much. The Tesla screen feels responsive like my iPad Pro, designed by Apple while the VW screen feels like a generic Android from 2013 with lag and bugs poor software and hardware integration and UI. New Model S and X can take Steam games which will later come to Y and 3. It could be worse, even most ICE cars feel like Blackberry.

Blended braking is faked by everyone else by dialing up regen when the bridge pedal is pressed. I often wonder why VW invested so much in a complex hardware-based system – I don't think we get that much out of it.

I hope they allow driving defaulted to B and 100% regen no brake press stop by next update soon.

I think it's already a great car. I've not had significant software bugs. My only practical issues are the mirror memory (ended up buying wide angle mirror stickers, which work even better than dip on reverse), and the lack of auto-lock, and I wish it had a front camera for parallel parking.

Software-wise, a lot of the Tesla features are more like toys, like the fart pillow. I prefer CarPlay.

The Tesla phone app works like it should and I had too much expectations from VW.

I am an Apple Fanatic and had CarPlay first generation in a 2017 BMW X3 and thought it was the best thing. Afterwards I had 3 Nissan Leafs without it and missed it so much. When I got the Model Y I wished I had it, but it turns out the software is sufficient and exceeds my expectations. I use to prefer Apple Maps because of the cohesiveness in voice color and layout, handoff mode, but have gotten use to Teslas Google map integration and music. The live traffic reroute is much better than Waze and everything is at your finger tips. I wish VW just straight up copied Tesla instead of trying to be different or reinvent.

I'm similarly an Android Auto fan. I installed a later model year factory head unit in my Flex to add AA, and was an early backer in AA wireless to convert it to wireless. And VW's window-in-window implementation of AA is the best I've seen, especially running Google's Coolwalk multi-paned beta variant.

However my BMW doesn't have AA, and like your experience with Tesla, I don't think it needs it. It's because the voice recognition is fast and close to flawless, as far as navigation is concerned.

Because nav and voice are largely backend processes, I believe VW can and will improve fix this in existing cars, partly to ween us off Apple and Google, but mainly in an attempt to keep us onboard as a subscription revenue source.

Well said. I’m paying subscription for Tesla streaming service live satellite and traffic, music and the ability to view my car remote. It’s a luxury I want and afford.

I see a half assed subscription service on the VW app. One member here just bought it to get rid of the 2g/3g notification bug. 🤷‍♀️

I used to love my BMW Phone app, but with the 3G sundown it got deactivated...turns out I didn't miss it much, especially after I coded preconditioning/climate control starter to replace the panic button. Most of us are geeks wanting to squeeze out more stats and data, but what I like in the VW, is that I don't need to learn much more about the car to have no issues using it.
All I want is the ability to lock/unlock the car remotely from the app.

The navigation animations are definitely choppy on VW and the color scheme is bleh, but because it senses the lane you're in and integrates with the ID Light, I've noticed myself preferring it over Apple Maps. Super super convenient.

ohh, and about the interface, I definitely notice myself phantom-reaching for the Big Knob used by BMW. That thing is nearly perfect.

I want the lock and unlock and also walk away auto door lock or give me dumb auto lock in 10 seconds after my ass is off the seat.

I hate the navigation not having satellite photo mode, not having EA chargers built in and the worse is it couldn’t find a Trader Joe’s near me that’s been there for over 5 years! Obviously not a smart map. Do I need to buy a DVD at the dealer to upgrade? 🙄

I decided to snag a “Biden Build” (white/black) lol Model 3 Performance from inventory with delivery in a few weeks. I figured for $47.5k (assuming the M3P eventually is added to the IRS list), why the hell not! It’s now priced right for what it is. The M3P is to compliment “Ida” our ID4. The Vdub isn’t going anywhere, love that bugger!

We have had an ID4 on order since August. VW’s January 4 price rise did not sit well, but we really like the car. It would replace our 4 year old Model 3. The Model Y price drop is a game changer. We reserved one today, expected delivery in mid-February. if Volkswagen does not respond on the pricing, we will take the Model Y. This decision took a long serious talk between my spouse and I. She pushed for the Tesla and she loves the ID4.

Yes, but it has Apple CarPlay / Android Auto and Google Maps app will give you all of that for free…

VW is hoping for a subscription from their maps data and software apps to generate extra revenue but that is also half baked. There’s going to be confusion with having two maps by someone that is not tech savvy.

The only time I’ve ever had to pay for Apple Car Play was for a BMW X3 and my spouse’s NX300 (replaced by iD4) and both were just added subscription costs by VW and Lexus for implementation. Apple gives CarPlay away for free to get people hooked and to dominate that market.

There’s external screens for Tesla’s and older cars to get CarPlay made by small Chinese companies that wouldn’t otherwise make them if not for the free licensing.

The OEM car companies would charge to turn it on. I’m selling a NX300 2019 and never activated it because the dealer wanted $500 but it is capable.

Apple CarPlay use by cars requires that you purchase an iPhone. The free CarPlay is similar to how people have to buy a Tesla in order to access the Supercharger network. Of course that is today’s reality versus Elon’s ever future promises to open his Superchargers to non Tesla’s.

Not watching it now, but if it's the one I watched before, that clown gave up on finding the extremely obvious home button on the screen in half a second, tried to find a DCFC in the scheduled charging menu, and essentially said it's not laid out like Tesla so it's not understandable. Just to name a few.
