Perfect location for me. Same spot as the fuel door for all other VW's I've owned, save for my '67 Beetle where it (fuel cap) was in the frunk.

To briefly change the subject @Spin.
Did you order your L2 charger from PSEG? IF so how long did it take them to ship it?
I ordered a week ago and it still says order processing.
I ordered the JuiceBox40 by the way.
Yes I did. In march of 2021 it only took a couple of days to get it. I recently ordered a Nest thermostat from them and it came in less than a week.

Lots of opinions in this thread :D . I'll add mine, the charge port location on the ID.4 is in the perfect location for my future EVSE setup in the garage. As others have said, it'll vary for each individual's situation, so they'll never be able to please everyone (without installing multiple ports around that car which I think is a non-starter).

Damn, PSEG taking its time shipping mine.
I had the electrician in last Tuesday installing the 220 volt outlet in my garage, just need the charger now.
Not a big deal, there are a couple of chargepoint L2 units in my office parking lot, I can always charge at work.

The charge port door is perfect for me because it's in the same place on my Mitsubishi, which I drive every day. For me, the pain in the neck location was my 2017 Chevy Volt - I had to install a separate EVSE on a pole in the center of my garage . . . . or, deal with cords laying on the floor which I hate

Backing into ANY parking place has never made a lick of sense to me. Most Americans can't get centered in a parking spot when parking nose in - There'd be bent fenders if most of them tried backing in, especially in as tight a spot as many garages. When you pull in nose first, backing out just retraces the trip in, so it can be done much, much easier than backing in. My last few cars have all had cross traffic alerts if there is anyone around when I have it in reverse. It's just safer and much quicker all around parking nose in. Don't you just love waiting and waiting for someone to make their third or fourth pass trying to back into a spot? Case closed as far as I'm concerned

I am all for backing in, I do that all the time in all my cars, though lift gate becomes inaccessible in my garage. While, yes, you can make it all work and figure out best placement for charger for id.4, but is it ideal location for charging port for most and frequent use? No way.

I have a 100' driveway with no place to turn around and its up hill so I would need to turn in the street and then back in, uphill to my garage so its not ideal. It is much easier to pull in head first then back down the driveway, downhill but like I said, the 25' cord solves the issue for us.
I have to back up my driveway in order to charge. Two problems exist. First it’s a lot more complicated at night. Second , my street is a main cross traffic street in my subdivision. Just when I stop and start to back into the driveway there is often some “donkey” on my bumper.

Agree!

Backing up into cross traffic may be illegal depending on you local regulations, it is where I live. And there's an increased risk of at fault collision.
I reckon this is very regional. We have areas that have both requirements. One place (only one I know of) has angle parking where you are required to back in. Some people are comically bad at it. We have other lots that specify "Nose in parking only" - these tend to be tighter lots. But these are private rules set by the lot, not by law. Conversely, our local Costco has spaces so big you can pretty much open the door 100% and not hit the car next to you. You could probably park an Abrams tank within the lines at Costco.

I don't think it's controversial to say that the average driver can more easily pull in forwards to perpendicular spots. Reversing into a defined/confined space is not so easy for some. I'm not aware of any locality near me that forbids reversing out of a parking space. Most lots are on private property, and most street parking is parallel.

I don't have my car yet but doesn't the ID4 have memory parking for situations like this if you have to back in to charge at home? I admit I kind of suck at backing up and was hoping this feature would help. Of course you do have to get it right at least once to set it!

Mine came with a 14-50 plug. Is that what the electrician installed?

Cross traffic as in backing out of a drive way into a street or road. That's illegal here.

Funny thing, my wife has been pulling in our parking spot for ever. It's always been a somewhat complicated process for her involving a few back and forth to get in. I back up and it's done in a single maneuver. She recently tried backing in and after a few attempts this is now her favourite way of parking. Of course she put the onus for not letting her know this was much easier by telling "You never told me it was easier to back up" even though she's been in the car countless times when I park.

it's the damn charging port location...
I love the charge port location. It works perfectly in my garage side-by-side with the Model Y, using the same EVSE mounted in the middle.

However, in the case of the VW, most German ICE cars have the filler access on the right side of the car. That's because the mufflers on most of those cars are on the left side, and for safety, they purposely placed the filler in a location where spilled fuel would not likely come in contact with a hot exhaust system.
That's not why the gas tank opening is located on the rear right. It's so that you could pull over and be able to fill the tank from a jerry can without being hit by a passing car. This goes back to when people carried jerry cans with them because there weren't enough gas stations around. History repeats itself except there are no usable jerry cans filled with electrons.

It's like headlights, where the blatantly obvious need for regulation is beyond the ken of the regulators.
