I would bet that all of these cars are "good enough". I would be happy with any of them. I'm just glad to see some choice finally in the EV market. For far too long the limp Leaf was out there, and although I loved my Bolt I need better safety. Since my ProS won't get here until December/January if an Ioniq or a Mach E shows up nearby, sure, I'd take it.

I agree. My wife and I are literally nitpicking over things between the VW and the Ioniq 5. Neither of us personally cared for the Mach E, but that's personal taste more than the competence of the vehicle as an EV.

We are pretty strongly leaning now towards the VW just because of some creature comfort issues that Hyundai made specific to their model: no rear wiper, no wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, no sunroof shade, and the ride. Everything we've read about the ride says it's 'typical Hyundai', and while they seem to have really taken it to Tesla in acceleration, handling for us is a much bigger priority and have never cared for their handling personally.

But yeah, all are equally competent other than your preferences, which is nothing but great for consumers!

I hate these side-by-side "shootout" style reviews. They're such different cars.

I mean, the Ioniq is dinged for price, but the ID 4 isn't given a star for "value" in the Pros column.

No windshield wiper is a Con against the Ioniq? Puleese! I bet the rear of the car stays cleaner than the ID.4 due to that redirected airflow. That dirty ID.4 rear end is a real pain point worthy of mention.

I didn't like the Mach-e so that wasn't a contender. The Ioniq might have been, but there's no denying the value proposition of the ID.4, and this is Now, I bought the ID 4 Then. For all intents, the Ioniq looks to have the same practicalities of the ID.4, just at a slightly higher price point. I think I'd be equally happy with either.

One thing to remember is that the ID4 has several different UK versions not available in the US. That said I have made my choice and am overall happy with it. A few quibbles of course, but to be expected in a new car.

Bjorn would disagree with you: (1) Hyundai Ioniq 5 driving impressions & tech insight - YouTube @ ~35:30. He says it 'gets wet, stays wet, and then you can't see shhheeeet'. Same with the backup camera.

You can work around it with probably something like RainEx or whatever, but I only ever liked using that back when I was riding motorcycles.

Have personally never driven a modern car where the back window didn't get dirty as hell, all the way back to my 1983 Porsche 944.

I do agree that these shootouts are often inconsistent in their ratings car to car however.

As someone who owned a Kona Electric and had the car bought back by Hyundai because they simply couldn't get out of their own way dealing with the battery recall...I'm not a big fan. The Kona was a good car, but the finish was way below the ID.4. I'm sure the Ioniq5 is a different car, but Hyundai has a way to go before I'll trust them again.

I take issue with the Ioniq 5 getting plus points for having level 2 driver assist, when the Mach E and ID4 both have it too. Maybe Hyundai's is slightly better, but the article doesn't say. And the last page dings the ID4 for charging speed, when the Mach-E's is worse. Sheesh!

Having said all that, I agree with the comments above that it's great to finally have choices in this car segment.

Agreed. The ID.4 charging curve is so much better than the Mach-e's

These cars target completely different demographics.

Ioniq 5 tries to be a sportier SUV like the Model Y. There's some odd design designs about it.
Mach-E compares to an EV6 or Model 3/Y - folks who want a hard accelerating EV. The base Mach-E RWD Select has a small battery and low range (230 miles) for the same price as a ID.4 Pro with a 270 mile range. Moving up to ID.4 range you need to spend almost $10K more for the Premium RWD.

ID.4 is a RAV4 replacement to me.

We cross shopped the ID.4, Model Y and Mach-e test driving each vehicle. We chose the ID.4.

Again, reference the Bjorn Nyland Ioniq 5 tests … he is very unhappy with the land centering as he says it keeps making micro adjustments in the lane and driving him nuts. Also, his latest 1,000km test ran into all kinds of issues with temperature management - too hot to use the power, too cold to charge. I feel like Hyundai tried too hard to hit some top line charging and acceleration numbers, but that’s a guess from someone who hasn’t driven one yet. He also said the ID.4 is more efficient at highway speeds.
